BNG, you may have heard of if, you may have been traumatised by it BUT, what actually is it? Biodiversity Net Gain. Sounds harmless really, a nice, positive term. Yet it’s been causing sleepless nights and countless headaches for architects, developers, planning consultants and homeowners everywhere! It's a new legislative requirement that says all developments must result in a 10% increase in biodiversity. Sounds simple and it should be, but it's proving to be a thorn in the side of many. It doesn’t have to be a headache or a thing of nightmares, follow these 5 SIMPLE steps to effortlessly increase your BNG percentage! First of all, you need to understand the local biodiversity. Get to know your birds, your bees, your trees. What species are present? What habitats are they using? A solid understanding will provide a sound basis for your BNG planning. Second, early integration is key. Don’t leave BNG to the last minute. Plan for it from the start, and incorporate it into your design. It’s easier to build in than to add on. Third, think beyond the site. Consider how your development can enhance biodiversity in the wider landscape. A few bird boxes on site are good, but creating corridors for wildlife to move and thrive across the wider landscape is even better. Fourth, be creative, have fun with it and let your imagination run wild! Biodiversity enhancements don’t have to be boring. They can be innovative and exciting. Think green roofs, living walls, bat boxes in the design of the buildings. Finally, and probably the easiest option of all, work with reliable, trustworthy and knowledgable ecologists and arborists! Their knowledge and experience will save you so much time and avoid any potential stress. Now fortunately for you, we have a team of fantastic consultants who are happy to help and advise you on your journey! We also have a number of books available written by the big man himself, Matt Harmsworth! “Greenprints for Growth” will tell you all you need to know about BNG and “The Planning Application Hack” will guide you through all of the nuances of obtaining your planning consent! Drop a comment below and I’ll send you a link to claim a free digital copy!

Imagine this: a dark, cold winter night. My ten-year-old, James, ventures to a friend's house. But he returns sooner than expected, 45 minutes later to be precise. He's hiccupping, his clothes caked in mud, and he's got a tale to tell. Apparently, he'd taken a spectacular tumble into a ditch. Now, before you jump to conclusions, no, he hadn't been sampling the grown-up beverages. But here's the kicker, and it's something you, as wind farm developers, should take note of. In the murky darkness, my son lost his way and stumbled. It's a stark reminder of a simple truth. Sometimes, you need more than just your own wits to navigate through the murky paths. Especially in an industry like yours, where the stakes are high and the terrain is challenging. You're out there, battling the elements, just like my son on that fateful night. The wind is howling, the ground beneath you is uncertain. And just like James, you might find yourself in a metaphorical ditch. That's when you need a team, a friend, someone to guide you through the darkness. It's not about going at it alone; it's about having the right people by your side. People who can spot the ditches before you fall into them. Who can guide you through the dark, cold nights of your project. Because here's the thing: No matter how skilled or experienced you are, the right team makes all the difference. They're your eyes in the dark, your steadying hand when you falter. So, remember this: Next time you're out there, facing the fierce winds and uncertain paths, don't be like James. Don't go it alone. Have a team that's got your back, ready to pull you out of any ditch you might stumble into. Because in this business, a stumble can be costly. But with the right team, every ditch is just a small hiccup on the road to success. Find out more: www.iroavr.com
