About us

Smart Works is a UK charity that provides women with the clothing, coaching and confidence they need to succeed in interviews and get the job. In the past decade, we have opened 11 centres across the UK and helped more than 30,000 women ahead of their interviews. We are proud that 69% of clients get the job within a month of their appointment. At the core of our charity sits an Interview Dressing and Preparation Service designed to help our clients feel the best version of themselves before their interviews. Every woman who comes to Smart Works receives a complete outfit, free of charge and hers to keep, as well as a one-to-one interview coaching session. We are guided by data to deliver simple, profound and tangible results, constantly innovating to tackle the challenge of unemployment. It is our mission to ensure that all women who need our help are able to access our service, and in April 2022, we launched our ambitious Three-Year Plan to double the number of women we support annually. By 2025 we will help 10,000 women a year across the UK.

We are pleased to share that the Smart Works Unemployment Index has been recognised with the award for Most Powerful Research using Insight at the Chartered Institute of Fundraising's Insight in Fundraising Awards earlier this month🎉 The Unemployment Index is our annual study that examines the unique challenges women face in the job market across the UK. This research aims to provide a deeper understanding of the barriers to employment, helping to inform strategies for change. As we prepare for the launch of our 2024 report in January 2025, we remain committed to amplifying the voices of our clients and sharing their stories with those who can drive meaningful change. In a time when the job market is increasingly complex, this work is essential.💪✨ We look forward to continuing this important conversation and sharing our findings soon. #SmartWorks #UnemploymentIndex #WomenInWork #FundraisingAwards

On Monday, we hosted a panel with our charity partner, Smart Works Charity. Our colleague, Charlotte Lorimer, was joined by Nasra, a woman supported by the charity in securing work, and Chloe, a Smart Works volunteer stylist. It was great to hear first hand from Nasra on the impact that Smart Works has on women across the country. With nine centres across the UK, Smart Works is an award-winning charity that gives unemployed women the tools and confidence they need to get a job and secure financial independence. Currently 63% of women go on to get a job within one month of their visit. We’re helping Smart Works hit their new goal: they plan to double their numbers by 2025, when they aim to reach 10,000 women a year. Over the last week, Smart Works has been taking part in The Big Give’s Women and Girls Match Fund. 💙 For every donation made, The Big Give double it. One donation, twice the impact.  We have raised an incredible £11,670 so far thanks to the generosity of our supporters and The Big Give’s match funding, but with 1 day to go, we have just over £4,000 left to raise to reach our target! Donate to our Big Give campaign today to double the impact of your donation and help us to double the number of women we support by 2025. #WGMF https://lnkd.in/eE33H3xU

About last night…✨ #BreakBarriersBuildFutures A room filled with excitement, hope, and incredible stories of young women fighting to break through the barriers to employment. Last night, we celebrated International Day of the Girl with a powerful photo story exhibition showcasing the journeys of three of our clients—Maria, Adrijana, and Billie-Jo—captured through the lens of award-winning photographer Amelia Troubridge. 📸 Their stories didn’t just highlight their paths to employment; they also demonstrated their determination to belong in spaces that often feel out of reach for young women. These women aren’t lacking in potential or ambition—they simply need the right support and a little hope to unlock the opportunities they deserve. Yet, the barriers they face—from not having the "right" experience to feeling like they don’t belong in the shiny glass offices of the corporate world—are very real. That’s why we're proud to partner with Norton Rose Fulbright who generously opened their beautiful offices to exhibit the photo series. Their shiny glass walls became a symbol of possibility, showing our clients that these spaces are within reach and that employers should be bold and tear down those walls, making room for young women who may not have years of experience but bring fierce ambition, resilience, and a hunger to learn. 💼🚀 By raising awareness, we can ensure that more young women like Maria, Adrijana, and Billie-Jo receive the life-changing support they need to build their futures. With your help, we can break the cycle of underemployment and underrepresentation, creating a world where every young woman has the opportunity to succeed. We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, to all our partners supporting us on this journey, to Norton Rose Fulbright for offering their beautiful space, and to Amelia Troubridge for capturing our clients’ powerful stories. Most importantly, we want to thank the young women who bravely shared their unique stories. Though their journeys differ, they are united by the common barriers they’ve faced—and by shining a light on the support, confidence, and hope they received at Smart Works, they are paving the way for many more women to follow in their footsteps and secure meaningful employment. 🌟 What do women aged 16-25 have? Passion, determination and ambition. 💭 What do they want? “Meaningful, long-lasting careers.” But we are in the midst of a youth employment crisis. Unemployment in this age group is at 13.9%, while the national average sits at 4.2% 📉 and right now, there are 379,000 women, between the ages of 16-25, not in education, employment, or training. This #InternationalDayOfTheGirl, Smart Works is calling on employers to be bold and harness the potential of young women across the UK. We are asking young women to not give up hope and to hold on to their confidence. ✨ Come through our doors for coaching, interview training, and a free outfit to help you shine on the day of your interview! Young women can’t gain experience if they’re never given the chance. So, we urge society to look beyond what’s missing in a CV and focus on the talent, drive, and potential they already have. Let’s break barriers and build futures by giving young women the opportunities, mentoring and networks they need to thrive. Help us nurture their ability: they are the future. 💙 #BreakBarriersBuildFutures #SmartWorks #YoungWomen #EarlyCareers #FirstJob #YouthEmployment #WomenSupportingWomen #FutureLeaders #BoldMoves

Celebrating 11 Years of Impact! 🎉🎂 What a journey it has been! As we celebrate our 11th birthday, we reflect on where we started and how far we’ve come in our mission to empower women across the UK. Where We Started: Eleven years ago, we opened our first centre in London, driven by the goal of providing women with the tools and support they needed to thrive in the workforce. Armed with a small team and a handful of volunteers, we began our mission to make a difference, one woman at a time. How It’s Going: Fast forward to today, and we’re proud to share that we’ve scaled from 1 centre to an incredible 11 (soon to be 12) centres across the UK, expanding our reach to 8 cities and enabling us to support women from all walks of life. Here are some highlights of our growth 📈: 1️⃣ 700+ dedicated volunteers who generously give their time and expertise to support our mission. 2️⃣ An astounding 63% of women secure jobs after their interviews with us, reflecting our commitment to helping them succeed. 3️⃣ 9 out of 10 clients report feeling more confident after their sessions, showcasing the transformative power of our service. The 3 things that have stayed the same 💪: 2 hours to help women realize their potential. 1 mission to empower unemployed women to thrive through work. 0 limits to what we can achieve together! A heartfelt thank you to our supporters, partners, and referrers for being part of this incredible journey. Together, we have empowered over 40,000 women to realise their potential and step confidently into their futures. Here’s to many more years of impact and empowerment!
