This morning, the State Opening of Parliament took place, formally marking the start of the parliamentary session. Following the ceremony, the House of Lords will get straight down to work with a debate on a motion for an ‘humble address’.     The debate on the address is the formal name for debates on the content of the King’s Speech. The first ceremony of the day took place earlier, with a search of the cellars in the Houses of Parliament. The King will open Parliament today, accompanied by The Queen.       State Opening marks the formal start of Parliament’s working year and The King’s Speech sets out the government’s agenda for the coming session, outlining proposed policies and legislation. The State Opening of Parliament takes place tomorrow, Wednesday 17 July, marking the formal start of the parliamentary year.       The King’s Speech, also known as the ‘Speech from the Throne’, is written by the government and sets out upcoming legislation and planned state visits.        The House of Lords gets to work straight after the King’s Speech. Yesterday, Tuesday 9 July, marked the start of the new Parliament, with members of both Houses of Parliament attending the House of Lords chamber to hear a Commission from the King.      The House of Lords then started oath taking, beginning with the Lord Speaker. The Lord Speaker is the first member of the #HouseOfLords to take an oath of allegiance in the new Parliament.       Oath-taking continues today and tomorrow ahead of the #StateOpening of Parliament on 17 July.

The House of Lords returns today, Tuesday 9 July, as members take an oath of allegiance or make a solemn affirmation to the Crown.       At the start of business, both Houses will attend the Lords chamber to hear a Royal Commission from the King to hold the new Parliament. After this, the House of Commons will be directed to elect a Speaker and the ‘Royal Approbation’ ceremony for the Speaker-elect will take place in the House of Lords chamber.      This reflects the Speaker's constitutional role as spokesperson for the House, with rights of access to the Sovereign. Historically the Speaker’s role was to report to the Monarch on the Commons’ deliberations. Although this has not been the case for several hundred years, the tradition of Royal permission and Royal approbation remains.       State Opening of Parliament then takes place on Wednesday 17 July.
