🌲 Buan mar an giuthas – lasting as the pine. 🌲 In Scottish Gaelic tradition, the Scots pine symbolises durability and strength, as reflected in the proverb: "Cruaidh mar am fraoch, buan mar an giuthas." "Hard as the heather, lasting as the pine." Our Caledonian pinewoods are culturally and historically important, having been shaped and valued by people for centuries. Now, less than 2% of this life-supporting habitat remains. Restoring and protecting these vital habitats is more important than ever. It's Burns Night - or Oidhche na Taigeise in Gaelic - celebrating Scotland's national poet, Robert (Rabbie) Burns 🥂 Burns had a deep love for Scotland, beautifully captured in his poetry and songs, such as "My Heart's in the Highlands." He often wrote about Scotland’s natural beauty, rich culture, and its people, celebrating the landscapes, traditions, and heritage that make it so unique. As we raise a toast to Burns, let’s also remember the importance of cherishing and protecting Scotland’s wild places, ensuring they remain a source of inspiration for generations to come. 🏔🌲 📷 SCOTLAND: The Big Picture [Image Description: A photo of Scots pines in a snowy landscape with a starry night sky above.] #BurnsNight #Scotland #Highlands

Parcels of hope: community, connection and creativity 🌱 We’re thrilled to share a guest blog written by one of our incredible volunteers, Alice Melvin, who took part in a Glen Affric Rewilding Week last September. 🍂 In her reflection, Alice shares what inspired her to #volunteer, the joy of building meaningful connections in nature, and the value of learning and gaining fresh perspectives through hands-on #experience. Volunteer stories like Alice’s remind us why rewilding is so transformative – read now 👉 https://lnkd.in/gmbhvj6d And we're delighted that Alice will be joining us again for another Rewilding Week this autumn! 🫶 📷 Alice Melvin [Image Descriptions: 1. Scotland’s red squirrels are true forest icons 🐿️ With their vibrant reddish-brown coats, tufted ears, and agile leaps through the treetops, they’re a joy to spot in the wild. 🧡 But these charming animals face challenges, from habitat loss to competition with grey squirrels. That’s why #rewilding efforts and #woodland restoration are so important – supporting red populations and creating habitats where they can thrive. 🌳 Did you know? 🤔 The Scottish Highlands is the largest remaining stronghold for red #squirrels in the UK - home to around 75% of Scotland’s total red squirrel populations! Play your part in red squirrel conservation by reporting your sightings 👉 https://lnkd.in/dQepPvHt 📷 Chris Aldridge [Image Description: A photo of a red squirrel perched on a branch holding a pine cone.] #RedSquirrelAppreciationDay

Ptarmigan - a bird perfectly suited to living in the harsh mountainous conditions of the Scottish Highlands. A master of camouflage, ptarmigan have mottled grey and rock-like coloured feathers in the summer. In winter, their plumage turns almost snow-white to blend in with the cold, wintry surroundings. This makes them tricky to spot – both by us and predators. Did you know? 🤔 Ptarmigans also have feathered feet! Their feet act a bit like snowshoes, helping them walk on top of the snow. ❄️ [Image Description: A photo of a ptarmigan in snow.] #Ptarmigan #Scotland #Winter #Bird #Birdlife #WorldSnowDay
