Would you ever consider being an Insect Producer? 🐛 Be inspired by Lindy Stewart from Beta Bugs Limited! Lindy breeds bugs as a sustainable #alternativeprotein to feed our animals, and to reduce our reliance on unsustainable alternatives such as soymeal and fishmeal which contribute to deforestation, overfishing and biodiversity loss. 🌳 The standard procedure to do this is by catching eggs from the flies, waiting for them to hatch, feeding them, and then growing them into large larvae. Delighted to welcome Richard Zaltzman, Chief Executive, EIT Food for a quickfire chat on EIT Food's mandate and support for building a #resilient #foodsystem. 👩🌾 A number of pertinent points were raised. Key takeaways included: 1️⃣ EIT Food is the largest #foodinnovation community in #Europe, focusing on 3 areas, health & dietary outcomes, #netzero food systems and #foodresilience. 2️⃣ #Foodsystems resilience is very pressing, although may not be on everyone's priority due to the elastic nature of food system. Long term it is a crucial challenge for Europe. The European Climate Risk Assessment, highlighted food as one of 6 critical areas, deeply engrained with other risks such as water, health and ecosystems. 3️⃣ EIT Food focuses on innovation across the value chain, whether ensuring crops are more flood resilient, shortening the dependency on global markets for food production or even focusing on the consumer. 4️⃣ #Farmers are an incredible community, but their voice is still poorly heard. They carry nearly all the risk if they choose to farm regeneratively. EIT Food is looking across the value chain on how to share the risk. 5️⃣ To drive real change in #farming practices, new financing practices need to be implemented, which allows for scale and momentum. 6️⃣ There has been no #innovation in #farming finance. Bilateral loans are still collateralised against equipment or property. #Innovation in insurance products and across the #farming community is required. New interesting discussions are underway. 7️⃣ Regulatory policy is important for a sustainable transition and an umbrella for change, however, there are plenty of opportunities to support a #resilient and #sustainable #foodsystem. Organic food is becoming more and more popular each year as people are becoming more conscious of what they are eating and the story behind the produce. 💡To note, the process of organic farming avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics or growth hormones.💡 Let's explore some of the main reasons why people are choosing organic... 1️⃣ Health and Wellness: Organic food can be seen as a healthier option due to produce being grown without the use of synthetic chemicals. 2️⃣ Environmentally Friendly: Organic farming practices prioritise sustainability, soil health and reduced chemical use. Those who are conscious of their lifestyle and how it has an affect on the environment may choose to opt for organic foods to reduce their carbon footprint and feel more eco-friendly. 3️⃣ Ethical and Sustainable Agriculture: Many consumers prioritise ethical treatment of farm animals and labour practices. How useful would it be to have a product in your home that could help you to recognise spoiled juice and overall help to reduce waste? Well, our delivery partner Mimica can help with that! 😍 Here at EIT Food, we funded a household trial which explored the potential of Mimica's innovation, called Bump. Bump is a temperature-sensitive cap or tag that tells you if your food or drink is fresh by turning bumpy when it has spoiled, based on actual storage conditions. The consumer trial consisted of adding Bump Caps to bottles of orange juice by AMC Natural Drinks and gave them to 33 households to try at home, which proved to be a game-changer. 🍊 What did they find out? ✨ Shelf life extension: 97% of households in the trial enjoyed their orange juice beyond the expiry date, and many people extended their juice for up to 6 days. ✨ Waste reduction and cost savings: Consumers can now avoid unnecessary waste with the help from the Bump, which also helps to save money! Find out more about the trial here 👉 https://bit.ly/3LAnngK #eitfood #mimica #BumpByMimica #bumpcap #foodwaste #ShelfLifeExtension #ExpiryDates
