Milestone Achieved at The University of Manchester's Fallowfield Campus A significant milestone has been reached in the redevelopment of the University of Manchester’s Fallowfield Campus - the submission of a Reserved Matters Planning Application - detailing the appearance, landscaping, layout and scale of the project, which includes Owens Park, Oak House, and Woolton Hall. The ambitious plans feature 3,300 modern student bedspaces, amenity spaces, ancillary residential dwellings and green spaces, creating five distinct neighbourhoods and a central hub, celebrating the local history and character. Dr Simon Merrywest, Director for the Student Experience at University of Manchester, said, “This milestone reinforces our commitment to providing high-quality accommodation for our students.” The project, led by the Viridis Consortium (GRAHAM Group , Equitix and Derwent fm), is progressing with demolition and enabling works, with the phased handover allowing students to move into their new homes at different points from 2027 through to 2030. GRAHAM has led the planning process in collaboration with the University of Manchester, architects Sheppard Robson and planning consultants Deloitte. The development will be one of the largest Passivhaus developments in the UK and is targeting BREEAM Excellent certification. Two of our projects – the TTP Campus, Melbourn, and University of York Student Residences – have been shortlisted for a 2024 Concrete Society Award. At TTP, the exposed concrete superstructure uses a concrete mix containing 50% recycled blast-furnace slag, reducing the energy consumed in its production and the volume of slag sent to landfills. The thermal mass of this concrete is used to balance the building’s energy consumption further. The exposed concrete is a protected armature with a design life of 100 years. Secondary finishes have been removed as much as possible to minimise carbon waste. Characterised by robust pre-cast concrete and brick, our design at the University of York reinterprets the character of the 1960s West Campus. Exploring the sculptural qualities of the material, the project places smooth concrete alongside acid-etched relief panels, the patterns of which being inspired by the original West Campus artwork created by Fred Millett. The resulting design creates dynamic light and shadow effects, with concrete – and MMC strategies – employed to improve the buildings’ performance.
