Dr. Faizan Shakeel, Medical Director of Advocate Sherman Hospital's Emergency Department, is training to run his first Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 13. In addition to running 26.2 miles, he’s also raising money to support Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) training, equipping nurses with the necessary skills to provide specialized, compassionate care for patients who have survived sexual assault and domestic violence. By lacing up his sneakers, Dr. Shakeel aims to make a difference, as SANE programs offer around-the-clock forensic care, therapy and advocacy services free of charge to survivors. Advocate Health Care received the Above and Beyond Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) State Committee. This award recognizes employers who have gone above and beyond to provide their Guard and Reserve employees additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits, and other similar benefits. “It was an honor to accept this award on behalf of Advocate Health Care and for the organization to be recognized for all of the work we are doing to support our veteran teammates, especially those still serving in the Guard and Reserve,” shared Jason Jahnke, regulatory coordinator at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital and Co-Chair of the Midwest Region Veterans Committee. Advocate Health Care patient Lynn Reisberg helped unfurl the flag at Soldier Field during Sunday’s Bear Down Flag Ceremony at the Chicago Bears game. Paul Collins, her husband, joined her on the field for the ceremony before they watched the game from the stands. Lynn was 36 weeks pregnant with her son, Teddy, last October when she felt like she was going to pass out while driving and was involved in a car crash. Her husband was out of town, so he called a good family friend who lived nearby and worked as a nurse practitioner at Advocate Health Care. After the friend rushed to the scene, the two rode in the ambulance together to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. When they arrived, a nurse quickly determined there were no fetal heart tones due to injuries Lynn sustained in the crash. Teammates and Dr. Vibhaben Thaker worked quickly to deliver Teddy via an emergency cesarean section and he was resuscitated. Doctors determined that during the crash Lynn suffered a placental abruption, which occurs when the placenta separates from the uterus before the baby is delivered. It can pose significant health risks to the baby as it leaves them with little to no oxygen. Thanks to the swift action of the Advocate team and care Teddy received in the NICU, the Reisbergs went home after a two-week stay and continue to do well, excited to soon celebrate Teddy’s first birthday. “I truly believe that the healthcare providers at Good Samaritan saved Teddy’s and my life,” Lynn said.
