About us

The American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) is a professional, non-profit, scientific, and educational organization. AATB is the only national tissue banking organization in the United States, and its membership totals more than 120 accredited tissue banks and over 7,00 individual members. These banks recover tissue from more than 70,000 donors and distribute in excess of 3.3 million allografts for more than 2.5 million tissue transplants performed annually in the US. The overwhelming majority of the human tissue distributed for these transplants comes from AATB-accredited tissue banks.

  • Today, on Juneteenth, we honor and reflect on the ongoing fight for equality and justice. This historic day reminds us of the resilience and strength of African American communities, and the importance of continuing the work towards true equity. African Americans make up 13% of the US population but represent 28% of those waiting for an organ transplant. Dr. Velma Scantlebury, the first African American female transplant surgeon in the US, reminds us: “Increasing organ donation in minority communities is not just about numbers—it’s about saving lives and giving hope to families.” On this Juneteenth, let us commit to advancing health equity and increasing donation awareness in multicultural communities. Together, we can make a difference. #Juneteenth #AMAT #OrganDonation #HealthEquity #MulticulturalDonors #SaveLives #CallToAction
