📣 Exciting news! The National Institutes of Health has awarded a $3 million grant to the Arkansas Children’s Research Institute (ACRI) to study how forever chemicals affect infant and child development. This important project, led by Dr. Aline Andres, will also explore whether a pregnant mom's physical activity could offer some protection against these chemicals' harmful effects. Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) – often found in everyday products like carpets, clothing and food packaging – don’t break down easily, which means they build up in our environment over time. Dr. Andres’ team will build on previous research showing how prenatal exposure to these chemicals may impact gene activation in the placenta, potentially affecting a child's health long-term. Dr. Andres is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the associate director of the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center (ACNC). The ACNC, one of only six Human Nutrition Research Centers in the United States, is a partnership between Arkansas Children’s and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in collaboration with ACRI and UAMS. 🌟 Meet Locke – a Children's Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN) 2025 National Champion and proud Arkansas Children's patient! 🌟 Every year, CMN Hospitals select local "Champions" to represent the children treated in their communities. These incredible kids and their families advocate for the critical need for donations to support children’s hospitals across the U.S. and Canada. Locke, born with Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart condition, received life-saving care at Arkansas Children’s, a proud member hospital of CMN Hospitals. His adoptive dad, Ben, had also faced a heart condition as a baby, and knowing Locke would receive the same expert care gave them both peace of mind. Now, at 6 years old, Locke is a happy and healthy little boy – a shining example of how your donations directly impact children's lives, helping them grow, thrive and build bright futures. Congratulations to Locke and his parents on this amazing recognition! 🎉💙 #CMNChampions #TetralogyOfFallot #Cardiology #ChildrensMiracleNetwork #CMN #Pediatrics #ChildrensHealth #Arkansas #Hospital #Healthcare

On Tuesday, Drs. David Bumpass and Matt Landrum successfully performed the first-ever robotic-assisted Shilla spinal growth guidance surgery at Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH). This innovative procedure combines the precision of the Mazor robot with the internationally recognized Shilla technique—a growth guidance technique invented at ACH by Dr. Richard McCarthy. Our team is excited to take the Shilla technique to the next level with robotic assistance, minimizing invasiveness while providing exceptional care for growing spines. With surgical navigation, 3D mapping, and real-time visualization, this advanced technology allows surgeons to perform precise, minimally invasive spinal surgeries for our young patients. We're proud to lead the way in offering world-class care right here in Arkansas! #RoboticSurgery #ShillaTechnique #MazorRobot #Technology #Surgery #Innovation #SpineSurgery #WorldClass #Arkansas #LittleRock #Orthopedics #Pediatrics #Healthcare #Hospital

National Geographic's “7 Breakthroughs That Changed Medicine in 2024” retrospective highlighted two groundbreaking research programs from Arkansas Children's Research Institute (ACRI). One of the recognized breakthroughs comes from Drs. Amy Scurlock and Stacie Jones, pediatric allergists/immunologists at Arkansas Children's. Their research, in collaboration with The National Institutes of Health Consortium for Food Allergy Research, helped develop Omalizumab – the first FDA-approved treatment for multiple severe food allergies. 🥜🥛🍞 This pioneering treatment is transforming the lives of children and adults by helping them better tolerate life-threatening allergies to foods like peanuts, milk, eggs, wheat and tree nuts. Huge congratulations to Drs. Scurlock and Jones for this incredible achievement in improving allergy management! #Research #Innovation #FoodAllergy #FDAapproved #Pediatrics #Arkansas #AllergyTreatment #Healthcare #Hospital #Study

Another milestone for pediatric care in Arkansas! 🌟 Dr. Tomoko Tanaka, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Arkansas Children's Hospital and associate professor in the department of neurosurgery at UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, joined forces with Dr. Hector Soriano, a neurosurgeon and director of adult neurosurgery spine at UAMS, to utilize CarboClear® Carbon Fiber Spinal Implants for the first time in the state for a pediatric patient, treating a spine malignant tumor. After tumor removal, these advanced carbon fiber implants were used to fuse the spine, offering a strong and durable solution that allows the spine to move repeatedly without breaking down easily. Carbon fiber spinal implants offer surgeons and oncologists clear MRI images that enhance follow-up care and improve early detection of recurrent tumors. While spinal tumors are rare in children, this incredible collaboration highlights our experts' dedication to bringing the latest innovative care to pediatric patients in Arkansas. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this incredible milestone possible! #ArkansasFirst #Innovative #PediatricSurgery #Neurosurgery #Arkansas #Milestone #SpineSurgery #Healthcare #Hospital #Surgery #LittleRock #Pediatrics
