After four decades of groundbreaking work and forward-thinking design, Principal Adam Gross, FAIA, will retire from Ayers Saint Gross this fall. Since his earliest days with the firm, Adam has served as a creative leader, bringing endless energy and commitment to his work. His enthusiastic leadership and relentless pursuit of excellence has been an inspiration for many, and he has helped to lay the foundation for a new generation of interdisciplinary designers that will carry our firm into the future. “It has been an uncommon honor to have worked with so many incredible individuals over the last 40 years,” said Adam. “I have always tried to not accept the obvious solution, but rather to push the envelope to engage people and places to create designs that enrich the world.” Learn more about Adam's career: https://lnkd.in/en8prPj5.

We’re excited to share that the Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center at the Missouri Botanical Garden was recognized this week with an AIA Maryland Excellence in Design Honor Award in the category of institutional architecture. Inspired by the history of the Garden and its extensive plant collection, the Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center blurs boundaries between indoors and outdoors, creating an immersive experience by incorporating elements of the natural world. In their award comments, AIA jury members called the project “both restrained and beautiful in its simplicity” with “wonderful use of natural elements inside to connect to the exterior gardens.” Partners for this project included Michael Vergason Landscape Architects, LTD and TAO + LEE Associates. In July I presented at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP)'s national conference in Philadelphia about trends affecting the trajectory of higher education. In addition to presenting, I loved learning from others' sessions and had the chance to reflect on that experience with Lee Gardner as he primarily wrote The Chronicle of Higher Education's new publication "Campus Housing for Tomorrow." He really captured my thoughts about the state of sustainability discourse at SCUP well: "I didn't hear a single human being say the word 'LEED,'" referring to the popular standard for rating the greenness of buildings. While Wilson, the sustainability director for Ayers Saint Gross, a design firm that works directly with colleges, didn't hear the term directly invoked, there was plenty of talk of carbon, greenhouse-gas emissions, and myriad other issues relating to sustainability. The discussion has evolved." Check out much more of The Chronicle's piece on the future of campus housing in the full report, available for purchase at the link below:
