About us

Since 1940, we have proudly served the people of Cherokee, Spartanburg, Union, and Newberry counties in South Carolina and portions of Cleveland, Polk, and Rutherford counties in North Carolina. Organized by a handful of rural farmers who sought to make life better for themselves and those that followed, we carry that same ideal today. Our priority is delivering safe, reliable and affordable electricity to our members and helping all in the communities we serve. In partnership with our member-owners, each year we donate over 100K to local charities and causes.

  • On March 25, 1940, farmers and merchants from Cherokee, Union, and Spartanburg counties gathered at the Cherokee County Courthouse with a vision: to finally gain access to electricity in their rural communities. Guided by county agents and the Rural Electrification Administration, a member-owned electric cooperative was formed. Broad River Electric Cooperative was incorporated in June of 1940. By October of the following year, new co-op lines were energized by a substation on Pacolet Highway in Cherokee County, extending service into rural areas of Union and Spartanburg Counties. From humble beginnings to a vast network of 2,750 miles of power lines and over 21,200 members, Broad River Electric Cooperative is a testament to community collaboration and forward-thinking leadership. Here’s to the legacy of power and progress! ⚡️ Read more about our story here: https://lnkd.in/eSzjRXTf

  • "I am grateful for the generosity in assisting the B.D. Lee Elementary School PE Program. To ensure a successful field day, the school used grant money to procure various supplies, including eggs and spoons for relay races, sponges for relay races, bands for three-legged races, sacks for sack relays, balloons for balloon relays, and throw and catch balls with rainbow tails," said Bradlee Cooper, B.D. Lee PE Coach. Whether it's in the classroom or out on the field, the Bright Ideas Grant dollars are being put to great use in our local Gaffney schools, and we're proud to help support our wonderful teachers and students!
