  • Tulane Colorectal Surgeon and CAGLA Scientific Advisory Board Member Dr Jackie Turner got the opportunity last week to present to President Joe Biden. Opportunity of a lifetime! Congrats Dr Turner. We are super proud of you.

This week, our Director Renee Wegrzyn had the honor of standing alongside President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden when they announced up to $150 million in ARPA-H awards to eight trailblazing teams selected for our PSI program to create new technology that ensures perfect cancer tumor removal. These performer teams are stepping closer to answering, “what if surgeries fixed problems flawlessly, the first time?” https://lnkd.in/eX3ABF6z During the event in New Orleans where President Biden and the First Lady delivered remarks on the announcement, President Biden said, “When Jill and I reignited the #CancerMoonshot in our administration, we were determined to launch this new outfit called ARPA-H. And that’s what we did… ARPA-H has so far committed more than $400 Million to ending cancer as we know it. A year ago, ARPA-H set its sights on a big idea, calling on researchers and innovators to pioneer new techniques and technologies to make cancer removal more precise, accurate, and successful. Imagine cancer surgery that removes all of the tumor the first time, without harming healthy cells… Today we’re announcing $150 Million ARPA-H funding for some of the nation’s cutting-edge cancer research institutions.”

  • Oh, what an evening at Copeland Tower! CAGLA's board of trustees and scientific advisory board members held a thrilling quarterly meeting! The best part? We had speakers from Rise St. James who shared their inspiring stories battling the Petrochemical Industry in Cancer Alley! Led by Sharon Lavigne, 2021’s Goldman Environmental Prize winner, Rise St. James galvanized community opposition and successfully defeated the construction of a $1.25 billion plastics manufacturing plant in 2018. CAGLA and Rise St. James hope to collaborate in the future in an effort to create new Cancer prevention and early detection programs to treat the current residents in both St. John and St. James parishes. We're in full swing planning the 2025 CAGLA NeauxCancer Conference, happening 3/27 - 3/29 at the Roosevelt Hotel, New Orleans. We're expanding with 4 exciting CME/CE Tracks and 1 Investment/Innovation Track. Our 2025 Conference Registration Website, featuring an updated Sponsor Brochure, goes live soon. Get ready for an amazing event! Best, Chad

  • Dr. Marc Matrana and I had an opportunity today to represent Cancer Advocacy Group of Louisiana at the Biden Cancer Moonshot Initiative event at Tulane in New Orleans. At this event President Biden announced that Dr Brown (Tulane Cancer Research/Lead Investigator) is the recipient of a $23 Million Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) grant which is a Biden cancer initiative. Dr Brown’s research is looking at a device he developed that assesses real time pathology specimen margins. This is groundbreaking in that the device can potentially give surgeons more information about their resection margins during the operation. This would allow surgeons to have better intraop decision making hopefully reducing local recurrence rates. #BidenCancerMoonshot #CaglaStrong

yall, circulating tumor DNA, is NOT.. circulating tumor. period. your circulating blood is a CLOSED system—meaning it all circulates from left side of heart, to right side. with EVERY. HEART BEAT. That also means it goes through EVERY cell and organ in your body, well because, that's how cells get their nutrition, after all. So, when an area has dead cells—because ALL cells outside of the central nervous system & heart... die. aka 'turn OVER'--with others replicating to replace them—those cells have contents. These BLUE prints, otherwise, called DNA. Thats why why we look for the blue prints—of POTENTIAL, even stage 1 tumors somewhere we don’t know where to look, or, to ensure you’re in a remission (aka MRD). #cancer #bloodtest #MRD #ctDNA

Proud to have been a small part of helping to create this bill and getting it passed in our legislature. Special thanks to Cancer Advocacy Group of Louisiana (CAGLA) and Rep. Brach Myers for the hard work and dedication to HB896 which was signed into law on June 25! This law creates the Louisiana Remote Patient Monitoring Program Law, building the framework and showing legislative intent for the adoption and utilization of technology as a high quality and efficient mode of caring for our growing access challenges and provider workforce shortages. Remote digital monitoring has truly changed how we care for our cancer patients at Ochsner Health and taken us to the next level. Louisiana CAN be better! #caglastrong #HealthyState2030 #40by30

Colorectal cancer is highly treatable if caught early. Yet, despite having screening options available, a staggering 50 million people – approximately one in three eligible Americans – are not up to date with recommended screening. Recently an FDA committee endorsed a new blood test as a primary non-invasive screening option. It has the potential to motivate more patients to be screened and ultimately save more lives. We, the undersigned, urge policymakers, health care professionals, and our fellow advocates to rally behind this groundbreaking technology and give patients more screening options.
