Carbon markets are rapidly evolving, but are they truly inclusive? At the SEforAll Global Forum, I joined a high-level discussion on South-South collaboration in carbon markets, alongside Dr Nkiruka Maduekwe, Caroline Eboumbou, Dr. Daniel Klier, Sarah Leugers, Jimmy Gasore, Tommy Ricketts, and Yasmin Mohammed. A key takeaway? Clean cooking must be fully integrated into climate finance mechanisms. With the launch of the Buyer’s Guide to High-Quality Cookstove Carbon Credits and the development of the new CLEAR methodology, the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) is working to enhance integrity, transparency and fairness—ensuring that clean cooking carbon projects not only reduce emissions but also deliver tangible health, gender, and economic benefits. For carbon markets to be credible and impactful, they must support solutions that improve lives while reducing emissions. The discussions were candid, ambitious, and forward-looking. Six key themes emerged from the discussions: 1️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿: The data is clear: clean cooking delivers large and immediate emission reductions, social impact, and economic returns. Now is the time to scale investment. 2️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Buyers, investors, and policymakers need transparency and direction. The right signals can unlock demand and accelerate progress. 3️⃣ 𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱: Every market has uncertainties, but strategic, well-managed risks drive innovation and growth rather than stall it. 4️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Overly restrictive approaches can stifle progress. Quality means rigor, but also pragmatism - ensuring projects deliver real impact without unnecessary barriers. 5️⃣ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲?: Are we reducing cookstove credits to mere commodities, or are we recognizing their broader potential for driving sustainable transformation? 6️⃣ 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: Systems and frameworks matter, but ultimately, trust, collaboration, and leadership shape markets. Nearly 2.3 billion people—almost a third of the world’s population—still lack access to #cleancooking solutions, leading to nearly 3.2 million premature deaths each year. 🚨🔥 Notably, the carbon emissions from open-fire cooking are comparable to those of the aviation industry 🫨 . While transitioning the aviation sector to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF) requires trillions of dollars in investments, providing clean cooking stoves, costing as little as $25–$100 each, could eradicate this crisis for a fraction of that amount. On the eve of Women’s History Month, I had the privilege of speaking at the #NYSE alongside five incredible women leaders from the carbon market, Dymphna van der Lans, Margaret Kim, Mandy Rambharos, Sophie Westover, and Maria Eugenia Filmanovic for the launch of the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) Buyer’s Guide to High-Quality Cookstove Carbon Credits We convened in the Muriel "Mickie" Siebert Room, named after the first woman to own a seat on the NYSE. A true #trailblazer, Siebert shattered barriers in finance—just as we must break down barriers to clean cooking access for billions worldwide. This is not just an environmental challenge but a critical health, gender, and economic issue. Women and children bear the greatest burden of household #air pollution from dirty cooking fuels, making access to clean cooking solutions a game-changer for both climate impact and global equity. A huge thank you to CCA and ICE for bringing us together for this important conversation. *CCP ELIGIBILITY:* At Sistema.bio, we're working on several new projects (currently under validation), as we bring carbon programme management in-house. Alignment with the Core Carbon Principles and other benchmarks for high integrity is a primary focus. So, we're pleased that our Gold Standard methodology for Manure Management / Biogas has been approved as CCP eligible by The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) -- who have also confirmed to us that there is a typo in their press release, and it is indeed version 1.1 of our methodology that has been approved. Our new projects already meet the additional conditions set out for CCP eligibility, so we hope to be CCP-labelled at the earliest opportunity. From a carbon accounting perspective, this methodology is heavily-weighted towards measuring methane reduction, but providing access to clean energy for farming families is central to our work.
