At a North Side elementary school, CIS Student Supports Manager Lee launched a Good Deeds Club for fourth and sixth graders! In December, the fourth-grade group selected kindness as their club focus. Activities so far have included making kind note packets with hot chocolate for teachers, writing an acrostic poem on KINDNESS, and brainstorming ways to be kind and stop bullying. We can't wait to see all of the amazing things these clubs will accomplish this school year!

Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
About us
Founded in 1988, Communities In Schools (CIS) of Chicago is a non-profit organization and affiliate of Communities In Schools, Inc., one of the nation's largest and most impactful youth-serving organizations. The mission of our organization is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Through our two core programs - The Intensive Program and Partnership Program - we help schools and students access the support services and resources they need to overcome obstacles to learning, unlock their potential, and stay on the path to graduation. These supports are provided directly by CIS' highly trained staff as well as through our deep network of community partners. Multiple studies have shown that CIS' work, in collaboration with schools, has a positive impact on student success. During the 2023-24 academic year, CIS of Chicago will partner with 238 Chicago public schools across the city.

Mental health challenges are on the rise for Chicago's young people, and our team at CIS is dedicated to creating a safety net around our youth so that all adults can say something when they see something. We invite YOU to sign up today for our Youth Mental Health First Aid course, and gain the tools you need to respond to a young person experiencing a mental health crisis. For CIS Student Supports Managers in the high school setting, building connections with ninth graders – and their teachers – is vitally important. Not only do those connections help ninth graders feel welcomed, safe, and included in their new school environment, but they help young people know they have somewhere and someone to turn to if they need extra support. CIS Student Supports Manager, Jackie, supports students at a Southwest Side high school. When she visited a ninth-grade class to share more about CIS services, she decided to go a step further and facilitate a team-building activity for the ninth graders. Learn more about how the team-building activity sparked conversations on communication, critical thinking, and leadership that Jackie said easily translate to skills the students need, both in school and in the future. When we reflect on the 2023-24 school year and the challenges our young people and our city navigated, it’s easy to think the problems are insurmountable. But we believe that as the challenges have gotten more complex, the need for CIS of Chicago has grown — because access to education creates opportunity for each and every one of the students we serve. 74,300 students supported. 2,655 programs and services connected at 238 schools. 1,517 students provided with intensive supports. Learn more about our impact in the 2023-24 school year in our Annual Report, available now on our website! https://lnkd.in/geg4--gE

A year ago, CIS of Chicago, in partnership with Together Chicago, launched the Violence Prevention Catalyst Team. The team brings together representatives from schools and community organizations and explores ways to strengthen school-based strategies that provide students with a sense of belonging and safety. Our own Robin Koelsch helps facilitate the team, and this month, they met at the Meridian Charter School Headquarters and discussed data related to students’ experiences in their schools related to safety and belonging. The team also talked about change ideas that support their violence prevention efforts. Thanks to Together Chicago, Meridian Charter Schools, Let Go-Be Great, LLC, Prismatic, Helix Education , INSTITUTE FOR COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT, Illinois Network of Charter Schools, and BUILD Chicago for your support and active participation on our Violence Prevention Catalyst Team!
