Introducing, as seen on our Instagram— a Marvel Minute: a series to share notes of knowledge about our past, present, and future projects! Tim Fryatt, partner and project architect for 29 Jay Street, a new commercial building in Brooklyn’s renowned DUMBO neighborhood, discusses the buildings distinctive faceted glass fiber-reinforced concrete (“GFRC”) façade. Inspired by the innovative cast in place concrete technology of the adjacent historic Gair Buildings, and Manhattan Bridge’s cross bracing, the designs industrial muscularity is both contextual and sculptural. A building of its time and place. Learn more about 29 Jay: https://lnkd.in/dfyGJx6q #DesignEverywhereForEveryone #MarvelMinute #nycconstruction

About us
Marvel is dedicated to shaping public space, designing for institutional growth, and expanding economic and creative opportunities for a wide range of clients. Our architects and urban designers integrate the built and natural environments in every project—from infrastructure development and adaptive reuse to master planning, block building, park, and waterfront design, as well as multi- and single-family housing. We apply the same meticulous attention to detail to all scales and forms, with the resulting projects and spaces earning our reputation for sensitive and thoughtful design. Our strength comes from working with a diversity of clients. We have successfully completed projects for mixed-use developers, iconic retail brands, galleries and museums, public and private educational institutions, and city agencies. We have earned a national reputation for designing at the intersection of public and private space, from security bollards on Wall Street to a 550,000-square-foot hotel/condo situated in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Rather than specializing in a “look” or typology, our process consistently uncovers essential qualities of sites and existing structures and uses them to bring meaning to the new project through rigorous research and analysis. Our multi-disciplinary studio collaborates throughout the design and construction process to meet our clients’ economic and occupancy requirements, be it to efficiently address an immediate need or develop a long-term phasing and development plan. We are experienced at tackling a variety of challenges with innovative design solutions, as well as transforming ordinary projects into remarkable ones. After more than twenty years working in New York City and across the country, our team has pioneered an entrepreneurial approach to architecture and place-making that has been recognized by more than 60 design and industry awards from peer and client groups.

Marvel is celebrating the groundbreaking of a wonderful addition to the colorful tapestry of the Bronx– a new lobby and entrance to The Bronx Museum of the Arts! The site at Grand Concourse and East 165th Street officially broke ground last week on a $33 million reconstruction project designed by Marvel, with New York City Economic Development Corporation overseeing, and Consigli Construction Co., Inc. signed on for construction. This intervention re-imagines the entrance, connects the circulation throughout all the galleries and creates a unified experience that invites all users to be immersed into the spaces and the art. We thank all those that made this project possible and now invite community members and supporters to follow along as we begin construction! 29 Jay Street, designed by Marvel , is nearing completion in Brooklyn's DUMBO Historic District, and we couldn't be more excited to share how close the final build is to our original vision. Marvel and Jay Street Office LLC collaborated to create this 11-story, 225,000 square foot commercial building at the corner of Jay and Plymouth Streets. The bold, glass fiber reinforced concrete panels and floor-to-ceiling glass have brought our design to life. The remaining finishing touches, including the ground floor light fixtures and fir green metal canopies, are underway, and the surrounding sidewalks will soon be re-poured.
