  • Staples did a survey of their US workers and concluded that 62% of employees would accept a lower salary in exchange for better benefits. However, that was dependent on demographics. Employees with families were zoned in on better benefits and more work/life balance. Single employees still preferred a better salary. But benefits are a key element in employee retention. According to a survey last fall conducted by a large HR software company, more than half of employees said they would stay with their current company because of benefits. The valued benefits by employees? In addition to the core benefits (health insurance, paid time off, vision/dental, retirement, life insurance and short/long term disability - source Zenefits), people are seeking remote work options, flexible hours, professional development and fitness/ wellness programs. According to an article by Forbes Advisor, 30% of 18-41-year-olds are loving pet insurance. So what should you offer to entice the best employees? Look at the demographics of the people you are seeking to draw to your company. Consider polling or conducting a focus groups of current employees and executives to understand what benefits are most valued. Consider industry standards and benchmarks. Assess your company’s budget and financial capabilities. Additionally, you can consult with HR professionals or benefits specialists to understand legal requirements and best practices. I’m burying the lead here, but I hope you’re still with me. Perhaps one of the most critical practices you can take to attract top candidates is to share your benefits package during the interview process. Often employers wait until the on-boarding process to have this discussion. But if you have a great benefits package, flaunt it! It can be a great tool to attract the best and the brightest. ------------ Deanna Nesbit & Associates is a certified woman-owned business that provides executive-level recruiting and HR services. • As an HR executive recruiter, I often navigate the dynamic terrain of recruitment strategies. Today, let’s delve into the pros and cons of two key approaches: internal and external hiring. INTERNAL HIRING: Benefits: • Faster Onboarding: Existing employees are already familiar with company culture and processes. • Boost Morale: Promotions or lateral moves can motivate and retain talent. • Cost-Effective: Generally lower recruitment costs compared to external searches. Drawbacks: • Limited Perspective: Potential for insular thinking and lack of fresh ideas. • Stagnation Concerns: May hinder diversity of thought and innovation if not balanced with external hires. • Internal Politics: Challenges in managing expectations and perceptions among employees. EXTERNAL HIRING: Benefits: • Fresh Talent: Infusion of new skills, experiences, and perspectives. • Specialized Expertise: Ability to fill specific skill gaps or leadership roles. • Market Competitiveness: Attracting top-tier talent from diverse backgrounds. Drawbacks: • Higher Costs: Typically more expensive due to recruitment fees and onboarding expenses. • Longer Onboarding: Time-consuming process to integrate new hires into company culture. • Cultural Fit: Potential challenges in aligning with organizational values and norms. Ultimately, the ideal approach often blends both strategies, leveraging the strengths of each to meet organizational goals effectively. We work with companies and help them navigate the these nuances. This allows us to craft tailored recruitment strategies that drive success – quickly even if you recruit externally. • Happy 4th of July! The Statue of Liberty stands proudly in Upper New York Bay. She is a universal symbol of freedom. She represents the end of slavery in America and the diversity of our people. She also stands resolutely as a tribute to economic opportunity and the character and resilience or our citizens. • Small businesses are often quite innovative and adaptable! They’re like the David to the Goliath of larger corporations, able to pivot quickly and implement creative solutions to challenges. Many iconic companies, such as Apple, in someone’s garage or basement, proving that with determination and ingenuity, big things can indeed come from small beginnings. HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT THE TIME IS RIGHT? If you’re finding yourself and your employees working non-stop to meet demand, it may be time to expand. However, take a look at some key metrics before you jump in whole hog. A really good month or two may not be indicative of a sustainable increase in demand. According to the US Chamber, look at the following: 1) Revenue and profit margin “Consistent, double-digit year-over-year revenue growth for several years could indicate demand exceeds your capacity. Likewise, increasing profit margins despite rising costs may suggest that your operations are at peak efficiency and are ready for expansion.” 2) Customer retention and acquisition “Declining customer acquisition costs relative to lifetime value might point to successful marketing strategies and scalability.” 3) Cash flow “Healthy cash flow, along with savings, provides the financial safety net you need for investment and growth.” 4) Overall market trends What is your competition like? Are there barriers to entry for new competition? Is there untapped customer base? 5) Capacity metrics Sometimes you’re limited capacity limits your ability to meet demand or having to deal within the given confines, it may burnout your employees. BONUS NOTE: If you have determined it’s time to expand, frequently it may be beneficial to utilize the assistance of contract workers. This can help minimize risk while and help your current team with the changes. Contracting out HR work or hiring can be immensely beneficial for organizations experiencing growth. As a company expands, its HR needs become more complex, requiring specialized expertise in recruitment, employee relations, compliance, and more. Outsourcing HR functions allows the organization to access a team of professionals with diverse skill sets without the overhead costs associated with hiring full-time employees. This flexibility enables the company to scale efficiently, focusing its resources on core business activities while leaving HR tasks to external specialists who can navigate legal complexities, streamline processes, and implement best practices. Overall, outsourcing HR work or hiring allows organizations to concentrate on their strategic objectives while leveraging external expertise to support their expanding workforce and operations. ----------- Deanna Nesbit & Associates provides executive-level recruiting and HR services.
