In the Sub-Saharan Africa region there is a huge need in maternal and newborn health with high numbers of deaths, many preventable - the rate of maternal deaths is more than 100 times higher than in high-income countries. A key problem is lack of access to the eight antenatal contacts (ANC) and four postnatal contacts (PNC) recommended by the World Health Organization. It’s just really hard for mothers to get to facilities for these critical contacts – long distances, poor transport, the cost of both. Potential risks and complications during pregnancy or after birth aren’t visible or recognised. The delay in getting care results in far too many lost lives. So how can make healthcare for mothers simpler and smarter? 🏠 Task-shifting Antenatal and Postnatal care to Professional Community Health Workers is essential – certain ANC and PNC contact must be delivered at facility, but some focused on more basic ANC and PNC monitoring can be provided by Community Health Workers in mothers’ households – removing the access barriers. 📲 But Community Health Workers also need smarter digital tools. If they’re only equipped with tools to educate or check for symptoms, they won’t be able to identify risks or potential complications in time for prevention. Equip them with smarter tools that determine the future pregnancy or postpartum risks so healthcare providers can get mothers and their babies to the right care early and without delay. 💫 Accelerate access to essential diagnostics at rural health centres – standard ultrasound machines are too bulky and expensive, but the growing range of AI-enabled handheld ultrasound devices are making a difference where they’re made available, but we urgently need to get them into more midwives’ hands in more communities through investment and private sector partnerships.
