Last week in Chicago, Ahold Delhaize USA's FoodCare approach paved the way for grocery retail leadership to bring Food as Medicine to their customers. Steven Jennings, Lisa Coleman, Mandy Katz MS, RD, CSP, LDN and Elizabeth Marble Caton delivered a deep-dive into Ahold Delhaize USA's journey to empowering healthier consumer choices, the role of iQpay, Guiding Stars Licensing Company in overcoming technology and behaviour change hurdles and how this program is already making waves in Giant Food stores. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and share Food as Medicine Summit this past week. I shared my version of optimistic pragmatism about what is working and where we still need to improve the evidence base and partnership models. Wow! The Food as Medicine Summit 2024 was full of energy, great ideas, and examples of successful pilots. Some of my personal highlights and key takeaways: 💡 Whether we label the movement as 'Food as Medicine' or 'Food as Health' or something else, we are collectively striving for a systematic change in how we approach feeding America. 💡 Food as Medicine is not a replacement for medicine or prescriptions; rather, it is a means to prevent diet-related chronic conditions (preventive) and to improve the health of those with one or more chronic conditions (treatment - e.g., how diet relates to cancer treatments). 💡 Food as Medicine is not an all-or-nothing proposition. It can be rolled out in phases. It can also be part of value-based payment models. 💡 We have seen several successful pilots, and all of them appear consistent with the WIC data showing a positive return on investment; however, we need the support of policy, laws, and regulations to address the current fragmentation (Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial coverages vary widely). 💡 Improving population health through improved nutrition is a team effort. It requires a greater emphasis on nutritional training in medical schools; normalizing medical nutrition therapy from Registered Dietitians; understanding the psychology; taking into account cultural differences; and food manufacturers designing and promoting healthier food (not as medically tailored, but as just food). As an added bonus, I was able to see some innovation in action in Chicago courtesy of my friends at Gordon Food Service, Relish Works, and 4Roots. Yesterday was Demo Day 2024 for Cohort 6 which underscores their ongoing collective commitment to improving foodcare. Let's keep the momentum going! Coming off a great couple of days at Food as Medicine Summit in Chicago! A lot of wonderful brands and organizations were well represented and actively looking for ways to solve, innovate, and chart the course of this movement in the short and long-term. It's hard to distill two power-packed days into a single post, but here are the themes as I saw and heard from dozens of people in our space: ● #foodasmedicine is a growing movement in the USA and more organizations are taking notice and taking part. ● Insurance + Medicare + Medicaid buy-in is increasing and there's less resistance to these initiatives from the broader insurance and government players as more become attuned to the benefits. ● Nutrition education, coaching, and resources are a powerful step towards driving positive health outcomes, but getting food to those in need is still a challenge, especially in areas of the country where the population density is spread out (rural, ultra suburban, etc.,). **In fact, a consistent theme we heard from those who stopped by our table was that one of the largest challenges remains "simply" getting the food to people.** At Misfits Market, we're building the perishable supply chain necessary to support healthful interventions for companies, healthcare systems, as well as non-profit and for-profit enterprises looking to address these areas. Our nationwide delivery capabilities allow us to bring fresh, wholesome, nutritious food to urban and rural areas alike. I had the opportunity to represent Stop & Shop and the retail sector at the Food as Medicine Summit this week. Absolutely loved sharing a stage with this dynamic group as we discussed the importance of strategic partnerships and the complexities of scaling FAM solutions.

It was an honor to chair the Food as Medicine Summit. For me, the food as medicine movement exemplifies the incredible potential for everyone to thrive…beyond the health of the individual to the health and wealth of the community.
