As a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Commission on Nature-Positive Cities, Impact One is exited to share insights from the "Nature Positive: Financing the Transition in Cities" report. Developed in collaboration with Oliver Wyman, this report offers an in-depth analysis of urban nature finance and its critical role in global economic and environmental sustainability. Despite their potential to tackle urban challenges like ageing infrastructure and water security, substantial gaps remain in funding for nature-based solutions. Currently, only 10% of development finance from multilateral development banks includes nature considerations—a figure far below what is necessary. The report highlights that adding urban trees in 10 of the world's megacities could save $482 million annually in health costs. Moreover, harnessing the potential of nature-based solutions could open up an investment opportunity as large as $113 billion by 2030. To achieve this, the report outlines two critical approaches: 1. Nature mainstreaming: integrating a nature lens into all financial flows and urban investment decisions to enhance sustainability and resilience. 2. Nature-positive finance: Identifying and expanding new financial opportunities for nature conservation, mobilising additional resources, and diversifying funding sources beyond the public sector. At Impact One, we believe that transforming cities into thriving ecosystems goes beyond planting trees—it’s about understanding and tracking the real benefits they bring. For example, trees in dense urban settings can hold up to 162.86 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare and lower temperatures by up to 8 degrees Celsius. By carefully measuring their impact, we can show how nature-based solutions like urban forests and green spaces can transform cities for the better. A big thank you to the World Economic Forum and Oliver Wyman for their critical work in advancing these important discussions.
