  • The world now throws out 92 million tons of clothes a year and only about an eighth of it gets recycled, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. What happens to the rest? They either hit landfill or are burned... Now, researchers at the University of Delaware are proposing a new recycling technique that breaks down blended fabrics using chemicals and microwaves. Researchers say the process takes 15 minutes and can dissolve any blend of cotton, polyester, nylon and spandex into molecules that can be used to make new fabrics or products like dyes, electronics and tires. While this would be a huge game changer, we still need to address the way fast fashion produces apparel - both in terms of quality and quantity. Read more in The Washington Post

President and CEO at Goodwill Industries International

Gary Peoples was named Goodwill Industries International's Tommy Moore Veteran of the Year for 2024.   Gary's faith in God is strong. Combined with his former military training in the U.S. Army, he found the focus, discipline and motivation he needed to create a better life for himself and his family. After serving in the army, he turned to a life of drugs and crime and eventually ended up in prison. Eventually, with the support of Goodwill Houston’s employment and training programs for veterans, and through his own determination, hard work and faith, he was able to turn his life around and find employment at one of our Goodwill Outlet stores.   Please enjoy Gary’s story by watching this video. Gary- we are so proud of you and happy to have you as a part of Goodwill’s team.

  • 🌟Mission Moment🌟 James has embarked on a journey of discovery and fulfillment at Goodwill, thanks to a referral from Michigan Rehabilitation Services. With a deep passion for tinkering with his four-wheeler, James's mission services counselor saw an opportunity for him to explore his skills in a new setting. Assigned to remove batteries from old toys as part of his trial work experience, James quickly found himself immersed in a world of nostalgia and fascination. His eyes gleamed with excitement as he encountered a myriad of items, some evoking memories from his past and others introducing him to entirely new contraptions. But it wasn't just the memories that captivated James; it was the opportunity to unravel the mysteries of these mechanical marvels. With each toy he disassembled, James gained a deeper understanding of how they operated, fueling his curiosity and passion for exploration. Outside of his work at Goodwill, James finds joy in life's simple pleasures. An avid hunter and outdoor enthusiast, he eagerly anticipates the warmer weather, eager to spend his days in nature and sprucing up his home's exterior. As the seasons change and the days grow longer, James looks forward to embracing new opportunities for growth and enjoyment. His journey at Goodwill serves as a reminder that passion knows no bounds and that every task, no matter how small, can be an opportunity for learning and fulfillment. With a spirit of enthusiasm and a heart full of gratitude, James embodies the essence of finding joy in the every day, proving that with determination and a positive outlook, anything is possible. It was an honor working with you, James! Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication! #goodwillmidmichigan #mission #missionmoment #powerofwork

  • ⭐️Mission Moment⭐️ Mission team members, Josy and Paige had the pleasure of visiting Lapeer Plating and Plastics, Inc., where they had the opportunity to sit down with Human Resources Administrator, Joe Du Breuil. It was an insightful and inspiring visit that shed light on the incredible work being done at Lapeer Plating and Plastics. During our meeting with Joe, we learned that Lapeer Plating and Plastics is not just a manufacturing facility; it is a community that actively works towards creating opportunities for individuals facing barriers to employment. The company is strongly committed to inclusivity and actively seeks to empower those who may encounter challenges in finding meaningful work. Joe shared with us the initiatives in place at Lapeer Plating and Plastics to support individuals with barriers to employment. The company is dedicated to providing a supportive and inclusive work environment, fostering a sense of belonging for everyone on the team. This commitment is not only admirable but also aligns with Goodwill’s values of diversity and equal opportunity. At Goodwill, we believe in the power of collaboration and the positive impact it can have on our community. It is inspiring to see organizations like Lapeer Plating and Plastics actively working towards creating a more inclusive workforce. They diligently engage with organizations such as the Lapeer branches of Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Community Mental Health, and the Intermediate School District. We are excited about the potential for future collaborations and the opportunity to support initiatives that break down barriers to employment. #missionmoment #lapeermichigan #goodwillmidmichigan #communitysupport #PowerOfWork
