Narrated by Forest Whitaker and directed by Jake Sumner, “Seaweed Stories” is a vibrant, global look at the wonders of seaweed, and some of the extraordinary stories and characters whose lives have been entangled by this often overlooked marine organism. From Sway creating plastic alternatives from macroalgae, to the Indigenous Shinnecock Kelp Farmers using seaweed to prove their sovereign right to coastal land, and a scientist in South Korea supporting seaweeds’ sexual reproduction to create new species that can withstand the effects of a changing climate, the film shares how seaweed may hold answers to some of humanity’s biggest challenges… Presented by Lonely Whale in association with Re:wild. Made possible by the generous support of executive producers Phillip Sarofim, Trousdale Ventures, MAVRIK CORP., and co-executive producer The Snider Foundation. Double your #impact — donations matched this November. For every dollar raised for Lonely Whale, Re:wild, and other climate nonprofits, Commons, a rewards app that harnesses collective action to make a positive impact on the planet, will match it with a donation to Lonely Whale, up to $3,000. As a 1% for the Planet member, Commons’ support is helping build awareness and financial backing for our mission at Lonely Whale. We’re honored to stand with Re:wild and Commons—together, we can inspire lasting change. Join the challenge, donate to support our work: https://lnkd.in/e2-gv47c

Four years ago, we set out to find alternatives for thin-film plastics which make up nearly half (!) of all new plastic waste leaking into the ocean each year. We launched the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize powered by Lonely Whale to award innovators creating alternatives and, in 2023, awarded three winners – Sway, Zerocircle, and Notpla. All three were using seaweed to create their solutions. This serendipitous connection set us on a journey to uncover global stories of seaweed and the people whose lives this incredible marine organism has entangled. Dive deeper on www.unwrapthefuture.org

What a moment!! This past weekend we premiered "Seaweed Stories" at Hamptons International Film Festival and it was incredible – from the Air, Land, and Sea convening with Jeff Ragovin and South Fork Sea Farmers to our screening alongside SLUDGE: A PFAS UPRISING, Terra Mater, and The Fly Collectors. When we started this journey nearly one year ago with director Jake Sumner, we couldn't have imagined what shape our would take. So thrilled to spotlight this incredible community of 'seaweed-y' people who have looked to nature (the original innovator) for answers to some of our greatest challenges. We can't wait for you to see their stories. Thank you to Forest Whitaker for lending your voice as narrator, our incredible Executive Producers, Phillip Sarofim Trousdale Ventures and MAVRIK, Co-Executive Producer The Snider Foundation for supporting the film, and the incredible team who poured their heart and soul into bringing it to life. Radical collaboration is how you #unwrapthefuture. We can’t wait to see you at a screening soon! Photo credit: Chloe Gifkins / HIFF

Today, we celebrate the impact achieved by our award-winning #UnwrapTheFuture program. Together with our extensive community of partners and winners of the TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize powered by Lonely Whale, we helped accelerate the adoption of prize-winning seaweed-based alternatives to traditional thin-film #plastic by trailblazing innovators Sway, Zerocircle, and Notpla. We are thrilled to share more about the impact of this multi-year collaboration. Read the report and meet our incredible community of supporters at UNWRAPTHEFUTURE.ORG. Thank you to TOM FORD BEAUTY, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. and Phillip Sarofim’s Trousdale Ventures for sponsoring the Prize purse and Accelerator program. This is how we #unwrapthefuture.
