🌱 In July 2023, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for the development of national #prevention strategies in his New Agenda for Peace (NAfP)—a call now reflected in the #PactForTheFuture. These strategies are an opportunity to make concrete progress on the #UN prevention agenda. 🚨 However, there are ongoing concerns about what those strategies mean in practice, as #MemberStates face fatigue from managing an ever-growing number of national planning frameworks. 💡 Our latest #PolicyBrief by NYU Center on International Cooperation (CIC)’s Céline Monnier and DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance’s Vincenza Scherrer unpacks what national prevention strategies may look like in practice and aims to: 🔹 Identify pragmatic approaches to building on what already exists, rather than starting a new strategy from scratch. 🔹 Explore synergies between national prevention strategies and existing plans, using examples from #security sector governance and reform (SSG/R). 🔹 Provide concrete recommendations for international actors to support national prevention strategies effectively. 📥 Download the full paper 👇 https://lnkd.in/erAvUevZ #NYUCIC #Peacebuilding #SSGR #GlobalPeace

🇺🇳 Can the United Nations be saved? 🌐 Eighty years ago, the #UnitedNations was established with a vision of collective #security and #GlobalCooperation. The organization was meant to safeguard postwar #peace, with the Security Council becoming a central role. But as the world has evolved, so too have the UN's challenges and expectations. 📝 In a recent Foreign Affairs Magazine article, #NYUCIC’s Non-Resident Fellow Thant Myint-U writes a book review on legal scholar Richard Falk and former German diplomat Hans von Sponeck’s “Liberating the United Nations.” 🤔 The authors argue for a renewed investment in the organization for a better future, but how can the #UN remain relevant in today’s challenges? 📢🚨 “One of the ways democracy could be in danger is by the functional elites in politics and civil service looking at this situation and saying ‘I did this, I’ve been through this eight years ago and I stood it up, I hung in there for four years and I don't think I can do this again’”—Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller of The Brookings Institution. In a recent discussion moderated by Michael Wahid Hanna on the elections’ implications for global institutions and #ForeignPolicy, Ambassador Martin Kimani, Dr. Bonny Lin, and Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller share their insights on this topic. 🌍 📊 Michael Wahid Hanna (Moderator), U.S. Program Director, International Crisis Group; Non-Resident Senior Fellow, Reiss Center on Law and Security at New York University School of Law, highlighted the challenges ahead, including flashpoints for unrest and violence, especially during the critical period between election day and inauguration. He also extracts some key points from a recent primer published by the International Crisis Group on “Risks of Violence around the 2024 US elections.” Read here: https://lnkd.in/efQmFzfa. 🗳️ Our Executive Director Martin Kimani shares his insights on this #ElectionSeason and divisive politics, saying, “This is an election of negativity. Each side sees stopping the other side as an existential need. Because the stakes are being expressed in that need, the extreme political reactions come with that kind of reaction as an existential contest.” 🏛️ “I think it's important to remember that when we have more domestic uncertainty within the United States. That could also lead to some of our counterparts being more uncertain about what exactly is happening within the United States”—Dr. Bonny Lin, Senior Fellow, Asian Security and Director, China Power Project, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). She reveals how domestic uncertainty in the United States 🇺🇸 can influence global perceptions, specifically in the Indo-Pacific region. ⚠️ Dr. Constanze Stelzenmüller, Director and Senior Fellow, Center on the United States and Europe, The Brookings Institution, explains that as political landscapes grow more polarized, both in the US and abroad, functional elites face burnout, and their willingness to uphold democratic processes becomes a real concern. As we approach the US election, this dynamic adds to the challenges of safeguarding #democracy. 🌟Thank you to the Reiss Center on Law and Security at New York University School of Law for hosting this important conversation on the impact of the incoming US elections globally. 🎥 Recording to come! #NYU #NYUCIC #USPolitics #Election2024 #POTUS47 #Polarization

✨ Excited to share our new paper 'Building on What Exists: Demystifying National Prevention Strategies' ✨ The recent #PactfortheFuture calls for the development, implementation, and support of national prevention strategies. However, it raises critical questions about their practical application, particularly amidst a growing number of national planning frameworks. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with Céline Monnier of NYU Center on International Cooperation (CIC) on this policy brief, which explores what national prevention strategies can look like in practice in an effort to reduce violence and foster sustainable peace. 💡 The key takeaway? Designing a national prevention strategy doesn’t mean starting from scratch. Instead, it’s an opportunity for countries to evaluate and strengthen their current approaches to managing risk and protective factors against all forms of violence. 🛠️ To conceptualize a national prevention strategy, it is crucial to: 1️⃣ Identify risk and protective factors that contribute to all forms of violence within a country; 2️⃣ Map existing prevention plans and initiatives, assess their capacity to address these risk and protective factors, and pinpoint the gaps which need to be filled; and 3️⃣ Connect the different pieces of the puzzle to ensure that all relevant sectors and stakeholders are aligned and working towards common goals. 🔍 This paper draws on insights from Security Sector Governance and Reform (SSG/R) to illustrate the importance of connecting and aligning national prevention efforts. While the security sector’s role may vary across contexts, assessing it remains essential in any comprehensive prevention strategy. The insights presented in this paper extend beyond SSG/R, offering valuable perspectives for any strategy aimed at reducing violence and addressing its root causes. 🔗 Download here: http://lnkd.in/eJzgcmp8 #NationalPreventionStrategies #ViolencePrevention #SSGR #Peacebuilding #PactForTheFuture #DCAF
🌟 Our latest #PolicyBrief by NYU Center on International Cooperation (CIC)’s Céline Monnier and DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance’s Vincenza Scherrer is out now! 📝 This policy brief unpacks how national #prevention strategies may look like in practice and how they can build on what exists—using examples from security sector governance and reform (#SSGR). 💭 To conceptualize a national prevention strategy, it is key to: 1️⃣ Identify risk and protective factors for violence. 2️⃣ Map existing prevention plans and initiatives, assess their capacity to address these risk and protective factors, and pinpoint the gaps that need to be filled. 3️⃣ Connect the different pieces of the puzzle to ensure that all relevant sectors and stakeholders are aligned and working towards common goals. 🌍 These lessons can also be applied to connect national prevention strategies to other plans, such as Women, Peace, and Security and small arms national action plans. 📥 Download now ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eJzgcmp8 #NYUCIC #Peacebuilding #SSGR #ViolencePrevention #GlobalPeace

💬 “The Permanent Five (#China, #France, #Russia, #UnitedKingdom, and #UnitedStates) can’t exclude Africa but the far bigger issue is what African states use [the Security] Council membership for—it should unlock strategic reforms in the multilateral system… It’s so much more than a matter of diplomatic inclusivity”—Ambassador Martin Kimani. 💡 A recent Africa Confidential article emphasizes #Africa’s increasing role in #GlobalGovernance and highlights both the progress made and the challenges that remain in achieving meaningful reform. 🏢 The reforms discussed, including more African representation and closer coordination between organizations (like the United Nations, The World Bank, and International Monetary Fund), are seen as essential to modernize the international system. ⚒️ However, there’s skepticism about how fast these reforms will actually happen because of a lack of an accountability framework and intense geopolitical rivalries. 📑 Check out the full article 🔻 https://lnkd.in/eqfuKvAG #NYUCIC #UN #Africa #G20 #UNSC #P5
