Last week our Council colleagues presented🆕research at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting, examining attitudes towards male #contraception, use of multipurpose technologies (MPT) for sexually transmitted infections #STI, and #dataviz and health equity. The majority of #MPTs in development incorporate #HIVprevention, but what about other #STIs? Barbara Friedland presented results from a national online survey to assess STI worry, STI risk, and MPT interest among >2,000 US women. The survey found that 9% of respondents reported a STI diagnosis in the last year, having multiple partners was strongly associated with worry about STIs, and STI worry and use of male condoms for HIV/STI prevention were associated with interest in any #MPT. Julie Pulerwitz shared survey results from 12,000 men and their partners in 6 African and Asian countries. Results show that attitudes largely favor new male #contraceptives, though less support is seen among lower-income/education groups. This work helps fill a data gap in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, and underscores the potential market for new male contraceptives in countries with a high burden of unintended pregnancy. To advance #reproductivehealth and male contraceptives, we need to normalize supportive attitudes and develop informed counseling to address specific concerns. Our GIRL Center Intern, Emily Pangalila, presented on #DataViz and youth health equity. Mapping chlamydia rates and social cohesion among 15–19 year-olds in 2 states shows varied patterns—highlighting the need for county-specific, data-driven STI prevention.

🆕 Research from Arindam Nandi and colleagues! This study evaluated the effect of the rotavirus #vaccination program in India on disease burden & antibiotic misuse. The findings suggest that offering free rotavirus vaccination in childhood can reduce inappropriate antibiotic use in India. The authors suggest it is necessary to continue evaluating current strategies for improving the Universal Immunization Programme. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4h8zCjc

Since Margaret Ilomuanya’s Jeiven Biomedical Fellowship in 2020, Margaret has continued to collaborate with #CenterForBiomedicalResearchPC to build high-quality manufacturing facilities in Nigeria and has published several papers. One recent paper summarizes an online survey conducted among 393 Nigerian women, which found that 86% of respondents reported an interest in using #MPTs. In this paper, Margaret acknowledges Pop Council's Lisa Haddad and Barbara Friedland for their continued guidance and insights throughout the study. Founded by Mr. Martin Jeiven, a long-time contributor to the Center for Biomedical Research, the Jeiven Fellowship recruits talented graduate students and scientists from Africa to work alongside leading scientists in our NYC laboratories for 3 months before returning to their home institution to lead collaborations with CBR. ➡️ Read the study here: https://bit.ly/3Nwm0Rr ➡️ Learn more about fellowships at the Population Council: https://bit.ly/3UtxDME

Informal, unpaid care work plays a pivotal role in supporting those with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias (ADODs). Women often assume a larger share of this informal caregiving role, hindering strides toward equal representation in the workforce.
