Geological Society Energy Transition Webinar: What role will mining have in the circular economy? https://lnkd.in/enxijUwX As is increasingly acknowledged, the race to net zero will involve a significant uptick in metal supply, which in the short term will be overwhelmingly sourced from mining. However, a long term goal embodied in many governments' critical minerals strategies is the development of a circular economy whereby production and consumption of such metals will increasingly come from recycling and reuse. But is such a circular economy possible, and what will it look like? And what would the role of mining be in this model, and of geoscience in enabling and supporting it? Thursday 30th May 1-2pm - free to register. https://lnkd.in/enxijUwX Panellists: Tobias Kind-Rieper, Global Lead Mining & Metals, WWF Eva Marquis, Postdoctoral Researcher, Camborne School of Mine Gavin Mudd, Director, UK Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre Lucy Smith, Head of Transformation, Materials Processing Institute #circulareconomy #mining #responsibleresources The Geological Society
Responsible Raw Materials
Mining
Enabling responsible extraction and use of natural resources
About us
Following our formation in May 2020, we have been providing the means for different stakeholders to contribute to a conversation around the responsible extraction and use of raw materials. Through this we have created a repository of up-to-date information that can be tapped, as well as becoming a go-to for advice, education and practical solutions across the industry. We aim to ensure that from cradle to grave, raw materials are handled responsibly.

In the fourth day of its 2024 conference Responsible Raw Materials connected ideas across all levels of mineral value chains, from responsible artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) to the drivers of holistic performance in large-scale mining (LSM), from responsible finance and pricing to criticality strategies redefining global relationships. 🌐 The key takeaway was precisely the necessity and value of this multi-dimensional and dynamic approach: there is no silver bullet, but a multitude of critical choices which must be guided by shared ambitions, agreed principles and honest brokering of outcomes - and their consequences. ⚖ "The pendulum is swinging from confrontation to collaboration, from consultation to consent, recognizing that relationships are assets, no less significant than mineral reserves. A new value equation has emerged that is based on understanding the relationship between the “how” of engagement and the potential for achieving resilient outcomes." Find out more about the people and organisations making this happen in our recap ! ⏩ This free, open, online conference wrapped up the following day and all talks are already available on https://lnkd.in/e5mu-FAj via the link next to each speaker and topic in the schedule. #CriticalChoices #ResponsibleRawMaterials #ResponsibleInvestment #ResponsibleMining #ResponsibleSourcing #ResponsibleConsumption

In its third day, Responsible Raw Materials 2024: Critical Choices continued to explore models and proposals to mitigate threats, realise opportunities and connect across siloes and boundaries – with a strong reminder that “what we want and need can’t all happen at the same time”. 🌅 Pick up the full morning session here, including our trademark "Burst the Bubble" session https://lnkd.in/eguC3J3Z 🌇 The afternoon session focused on partnerships and tackling complex governance and policy issues https://lnkd.in/evWabuDW 📢 "Social, commercial and strategic value of a project define its relative importance to one of several stakeholders according to their priorities. Recognising that value is relative, and understanding which stakeholder has the influence or capacity to best value it, is key to positioning a project even in the context of the current critical minerals rush. From the perspective of government, this entails acknowledging that the gap between commercial and strategic value will not be filled by private sector investment, but also that the financing gap concerning exploration must be addressed as a priority" - find out more in our recap below ! ⏩ This free, open, online conference continues today, join the conversation! 📅 Date: April 29 - May 3 🌐 Website: https://lnkd.in/e5mu-FAj 🎟️ Register: https://lnkd.in/eDjujdYe Join us at #RRM2024! #CriticalChoices #ResponsibleRawMaterials #ResponsibleInvestment #ResponsibleMining #ResponsibleSourcing #ResponsibleConsumption

In its second day Responsible Raw Materials 2024: Critical Choices delved into how we approach complex systems. 🌅 The morning session (https://lnkd.in/gBnUP5D5) focused on how we can simultaneously manage uncertainty and build trust in mining and mineral operations. 🌆 The afternoon session (https://lnkd.in/g9eQbCw4) hinged on the necessity and value of more engagement – with planetary boundaries, with each other and with the opportunities that arise from rethinking familiar models. ⚠ "Mining, by its very nature, incurs a level of uncertainty that differs from other industries, in fact mining, and specifically exploration, has often been likened to the ultimate form of gambling" - starting from there, we cannot overstate the challenge of defining risks ... and dealing with them ! ⏩ This free, open, online conference continues today, join the conversation! 📅 Date: April 29 - May 3 🌐 Website: https://lnkd.in/e5mu-FAj 🎟️ Register: https://lnkd.in/eDjujdYe Join us at #RRM2024! #CriticalChoices #ResponsibleRawMaterials #ResponsibleInvestment #ResponsibleMining #ResponsibleSourcing #ResponsibleConsumption

Illuminating first session of Responsible Raw Materials 2024: Critical Choices ! ❓ Though the whole world discusses #derisking it’s obvious that the term has very distinct meanings and uses, with policy often not adequately reflecting private sector perspectives. Despite the sense of urgency and noise, it’s worth asking ourselves, as we did to kick off this conference, whether these approaches result in the reorganisation of value chains and improvement of responsibility across operations, linkages and borders. 👉 As we come to a time of action and outcomes, we acknowledge the internal challenges (skills and innovation challenge, limited growth, increasing operational complexity) and external tensions (contradictory societal expectations, planetary boundaries) weighing on mining and minerals, whilst giving ourselves permission to reimagine these value chains and the operations and linkages they encompass for more responsible and resilient mineral production and consumption. 📍 Delivering on the #transition will depend on our capacity to overcome systemic resistance to innovate, redesign business and economic models and reshape mining and minerals. See you on the edge of chaos (yes, we provide a map to get there - see the article)! ⏩ This free, open, online conference continues today, join the conversation! 📅 Date: April 29 - May 3 🌐 Website: https://lnkd.in/e5mu-FAj 🎟️ Register: https://lnkd.in/eDjujdYe Join us at #RRM2024! #CriticalChoices #ResponsibleRawMaterials #ResponsibleInvestment #ResponsibleMining #ResponsibleSourcing #ResponsibleConsumption
