Today is "International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem" or 'World Mangrove Day,' marking a dedicated annual spotlight on the critical links of mangroves to biodiversity, climate, and communities. As an implementer of notable projects including recent and current partnerships dedicated to sustainable fisheries in regions of the Philippines and Indonesia, we understand firsthand the importance of mangroves to coastal bio-places and the communities supported by a growing Blue Economy. Accompanying today's release of the Global Mangrove Alliance's 2024 'State of the World’s Mangroves' report, we echo the sentiment of IUCN Global Ocean Director Minna Epps in her call to action for much-needed investment in blue natural captial as well as increased coordination to address ambitous global targets. Through collaboration, partnerships, and alliances, we believe we can together ignite opportunity and accelerate innovative solutions to achieve greater positive impact for both Nature and people. US Announces Strategy to Address Plastic Pollution As Resonance works to implement projects to reduce plastic pollution, including our newly launched USAID #CIRCLEAlliance that includes partners Unilever and EY, we are encouraged by the news from the White House. Today the Biden-Harris Administration unveiled and detailed a new strategy to help address #plasticpollution at every stage of the plastic lifecycle, centering the need to protect human health and the environment, and accompanied by calls for reducing plastic production. The Administration also announced as part of its plan an ambitious goal to reduce plastic consumption by phasing out the purchase of single-use plastic across the federal government by 2027 for all food service and packaging, as well as events, and to eliminate their use entirely by 2035. Recognizing that the government cannot act alone to achieve collective goals of reducing plastic pollution across connected systems, the Administration also called on the international community to cut back on plastic production – inherent in the Global Plastic Treaty that is currently being deliberated and shaped by 175+ countries and influenced by the involvement of scientists and organizations. The just announced plan is considered a first step of many needed to shift not only how the United States addresses plastic pollution, but also how it can in its commitment work collaboratively with governments, entities, and in support of partnerships around the globe, to achieve critical goals and to reduce the serious of harm that plastic pollution, the production of plastic, and microplastics, pose to human and environmental health. These risks and impacts are particularly serious for the already most vulnerable communities and groups around the globe, including indigenous communities, people of color, and women and children.   We will continue to monitor the rollout of this plan, including next steps, and to examine the ways this work might influence our own work in projects with bold aims to accelerate the reduction of plastic pollution and engage local communities in building capacity to design and implement solutions. Useful #NASA Data/Technologies Tools Used in Climate Adaptation, Resilience and Decision-Making Introduced in New Online Courses _____________________________________________________________________ SERVIR, a joint initiative of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and USAID, has partnered with Geoversity.io at the University of Twente to launch two free online courses, available at the Geoversity platform. These courses introduce two valued SERVIR tools: (1) ClimateServ, a web-accessible system that allows users to access, visualize, and analyze historical Earth observations useful to decision-making across multiple sectors; and (2) Collect Earth Online (CEO), a custom built, open-source, satellite image viewing and interpretation system developed by SERVIR, FAO, and other partners as a tool for use in projects that require land cover and/or land use data. SERVIR seeks to center satellite data and geospatial technologies to strengthen weather and climate resilience, agriculture and food security, water security, ecosystem and carbon management, and air quality and health. According to an announcement of this initiative, this latest collaboration mirrors SERVIR’s commitment to increasing global access to NASA’s library of Earth data. https://lnkd.in/eEdP9M_C

We have been promoting the Safeguarding Carbon Markets Challenge (SCM Challenge), launched and supported by the USAID Countering Transnational Corruption (CTC) Grand Challenge, and implemented by Management Systems International and Resonance. This challenge will award multiple grants of between $50,000 and $500,000 to organizations with the most promising innovative concepts that counter corruption and strengthen transparency and accountability in carbon markets to preserve the benefits of critical climate finance. A webinar/Q&A session will be held tomorrow, July 9 at 9 am EST (registration below) for those interesting in exploring the challenge and process for submittal. WEBINAR - Q/A REGISTRATION LINK: https://lnkd.in/ePF-aPEw How timely then is Shanna Tova O'Reilly's featured blog just published by the Countering Environmental Corruption Practitioners Forum in which she details the technical, innovative, and pragmatic work of designing a challenge to address corruption in carbon markets. This forum is an ideal outlet for this how-to discussion. It is an active community of practitioners launched by WWF, the Basel Institute on Governance, Transparency International, and TRAFFIC, to encourage and provide connections for conservationists and anti-corruption actors to work across disciplines to address corruption as a key driver of environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate change.
