How can private sector extension drive climate-resilient agriculture? Panelists Kristin Davis of the International Food Policy Research Institute, Piet van Asten of Olam Food Ingredients, and Ben Odoemena of Winrock International answered that question during the USAID Enabling Farmers for Agricultural Transformation project’s second in a series of online webinars, held on May 23rd. Implemented by Winrock as an associate award under the West Africa Farmer-to-Farmer program, EFAT has set out to improve agricultural and extension advisory services to boost smallholder farmers’ productivity and diversify livelihoods in the face of climate change. Private sector-led extension has become increasingly important due to declining investments in publicly funded extension and advisory services, and the need to better support smallholder farmers in adapting to climate change. Moderated by Elizabeth DeFreest, private sector engagement officer at USAID’s Bureau for Resilience, Environment and Food Security, panelists stressed the need to increase investment in extension, strengthen private-public partnerships and build capacity through regenerative agriculture practices to help lower carbon footprints. #WorldRainforestDay The USAID Strengthening Competitiveness, Agriculture, Livelihoods and Environment – Natural Resource Management project, implemented by Winrock International and partners, addresses the dynamics that drive uncontrolled logging in Malaita, the most populous of the Solomon Islands, by building the mutually accountable partnerships needed to protect the island’s rainforests and related natural resources. SCALE-NRM strengthens models of local conservation economies around sustainable livelihoods and development of conservation markets that provide communities with viable alternatives to logging and that incentivize conservation. Here are three ways SCALE-NRM supports locally-led protection of forests and livelihoods in the Solomon Islands…

Winrock International celebrates #Juneteenth, a U.S. federal holiday commemorating the date – June 19, 1865 – that enslaved people learned of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation. This celebration is not only a recognition of freedom but a call to action for continued progress towards racial equity and justice. Winrock is committed to supporting Black-owned businesses in the U.S. through a range of public- and private-sector partnerships and projects including the Multicultural Business Xcellerator funded by the Walton Family Foundation, the Gulf of Mexico Historically Underserved Farmer to Farmer Grants program implemented by the Wallace Center and funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and previous Winrock U.S. initiatives including the Southern Opportunity & Resilience Fund. These and other programs aim to expand business support services, accelerate entrepreneurship and financing, and create equitable opportunities for Black-owned and other under-resourced businesses and communities in the U.S. Happy Juneteenth! #FreedomDay #SupportBlackBusiness #CelebrateFreedom #Juneteenth2024

On #WorldDayAgainstChildLabor 2024, we asked Monrovia-based James Yekeh, project director of the U.S. Department of Labor-funded ATLAS project in Liberia, to reflect on his experience leading Winrock’s child labor portfolio in Liberia over the past 10 years. He outlined three key approaches that have led to successful partnerships with government and communities to prevent child labor. #WDACL #EndChildLabor #ChildLabor #EndForcedLabor #EndHumanTrafficking #Education #YouthPrograms

The B-PEMS AugroJatra Climate Change Project participated in the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Expo 2024; a global event hosted by Bangladesh this year. The NAP Expo is an annual outreach event organized by the Least Developed Countries Expert Group under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that seeks to raise climate adaptation ambition by advancing the formulation and implementation of NAPs. Held from 22 to 25 April, the four-day climate adaption meet was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, in Dhaka and attended by around 500 delegates from 104 countries. B-PEMS was allocated a stall at the expo and hosted many visitors, including Prime Minister Hasina, to whom it introduced the project. An audio-visual presentation with the project overview of B-PEMS was screened three times at the Expo. https://lnkd.in/edPq_KyX
