Sublime has been allocated up to $47 million in an investment tax credit to support development of our Holyoke, MA factory. This comes from the 48C Qualifying Advanced Energy Project Tax Credit Program, a collaboration between the Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that was designed to accelerate a resurgence of clean manufacturing in America. That resurgence will bring simultaneous wins for the American economy, workers, our supply chains, innovative American-invented technologies, and our planet. It allows us to not only scale the technologies invented here, but to ultimately export American innovation around the globe. We are proud to be part of this new Clean Industrial Revolution, and we are grateful to our collaborators in the Holyoke community and at the federal level. This program was highly competitive, receiving over 800 concept papers seeking a collective $40+ billion in tax credits. A total of $6 billion was allocated across 140 projects in this round, and Sublime’s inclusion resulted from an extensive diligence process that validates our next-generation cement manufacturing technology and scale-up trajectory. This tax allocation is a resilient investment strategy to make it easier to build and create more jobs in America. It’s clear that American economic policies are getting serious about investing in domestic manufacturing. We’re here for it! #KeepBuilding #AmericanManufacturing #cleancement #sustainableconstruction

Clean cement for a resilient future
About us
Sublime Systems is leading a swift and massive transition to a clean cement manufacturing future. Sublime’s breakthrough electrochemical process avoids the pollution caused by ordinary portland cement’s use of fossil-fueled kilns and limestone feedstock. Sublime instead extracts reactive calcium and silicates from abundant raw materials at ambient temperature, to make ASTM C1157-compliant Sublime Cement™, a 1:1 replacement for OPC in concrete. Because it does not require carbon capture, Sublime’s technology offers a clear path for cost-competitive clean cement manufacturing at scale. Sublime was founded at MIT in 2020 by Dr. Leah Ellis and Prof. Yet-Ming Chiang, both respected experts in materials science, electrochemical systems, and sustainability research. The company has raised over $200M in funding from leading tech investors, global cement majors, and cooperative agreements with the U.S. Department of Energy’s ARPA-E, IEDO, and OCED award programs. It currently operates a Somerville, MA-based pilot plant with a >250 TPY nameplate production capacity and is developing its 30,000 TPY first commercial facility in Holyoke, MA.

As we build momentum in the new year, we are growing our leadership team with the addition of Anthony Di Paola as our Chief Financial Officer! Anthony brings over three decades of executive financial expertise to Sublime. Previously, he has held key financial leadership positions at companies such as Ernst & Young, GE Water & Process Technologies, Seurat Technologies and FGX International. Anthony successfully led the IPO process for FGX and divestiture to EssilorLuxottica and subsequently lead the global expansion of FGX as both CFO and CEO. We are also grateful for Anthony’s experience overseeing organizations at the nexus of clean manufacturing. During his time at GE Ionics, he contributed to a division focused on water purification and global sustainability as well as clean manufacturing for Seurat Technologies. With his proven track record of enabling operational diligence and transformative growth, Anthony will be an instrumental leader at Sublime, particularly as we set out to build our first commercial factory in Holyoke, Massachusetts! #KeepBuilding #sustainableconstruction #AmericanManufacturing #scaleup

Thank you to Maynard Okereke and the Museum of Science for highlighting our work in transforming cement production into a process sustainable for the future! Profiles like this are important for enabling broader communities to understand the carbon footprint of today’s cement and the importance of cleaning that up. Okereke describes our technology as the “electric vehicle of the cement industry,” referring to how our process uses electricity instead of combustion to manufacture cement. This process has been independently validated for its ability to reduce 90% of cement’s CO2 emissions at mature scale, by avoiding carbon rather than capturing it. A special shoutout to our scientists Summer Camerlo and Mitchell Shapiro-Albert for being such great spokespeople about our technology and mission! https://lnkd.in/e8Rg2Y4b #KeepBuilding #sustainablefuture #cleancement

We're kicking off the new year with a great education session on January 9th, 8-10 AM ET. Our speakers will present innovative new technologies used to build and operate commercial buildings. We'll learn about inventive ultra low-power sensors and energy harvesting technology that do not require WiFi, cellular signals or the building's internal wiring. We'll also hear about cutting edge energy systems used in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Cleveland Museum of Natural History projects that allow for remarkable energy savings and reduced emissions. There are also advancements in the way contaminants are removed from boiler systems that require no chemicals, making the process safer and easier as well as more operationally efficient and cost effective. Our last team of speakers will provide a case study of the One Boston Wharf Road project. This unique project incorporated groundbreaking new technology in the manufacture of cement. If every project used this new technology, it would cut carbon emissions from the cement used by 90% without sacrificing performance. Speakers: Mike Smith, Whitespace Tom Sherman, Sustainable Energy Services, Inc. It's hard NOT to feel inspired and optimistic by spending time with our co-founder Prof. Yet-Ming Chiang.
Top Cipher News stories of 2024 from my rockstar colleagues: Amy Harder, Anca Gurzu, Amena H. Saiyid, Bill Spindle and edited by Jillian Mock and Margaret Pressler. https://lnkd.in/eZBTTfFg One my favorite pieces that I wrote over the last year was my story about Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Yet-Ming Chiang, which was also the first installment of my series profiling undercover climate tech superstars. (The next installment of this series is coming out shortly!!) https://lnkd.in/eckD2kJC Why is this series SO important to me? As I said in the round-up: "Developing and transitioning to a low-carbon economy is a monumental task that can feel overwhelming. But a collection of ambitious, indomitable individuals, such as the MIT scientist profiled here, are facing the challenge by taking it one step at a time." This mindset, by the way, is going to be my mantra for much of 2025: ONE STEP AT A TIME. Leaning into whatever may come. ONE STEP AT A TIME. What about you? Thanks to Nadya Nickels for this Cipher News illustration!!

Massachusetts is the “state that turns world-leading ideas into world-changing realities,” our Governor Maura Healey so eloquently says in this video. It’s a good thing the state was recently awarded $32 million as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration Low Carbon Transportation Materials Discretionary Grant Program! We look forward to the possibility of working with MassDOT as they turn this funding into new clean essential infrastructure for our state. Public-private collaborations like this enable us to simultaneously strengthen American supply chains, boost economic opportunities, address climate change, and improve the roads, bridges, and sidewalks we all use every day. At our October ribbon cutting with WS Development in Boston's Seaport, we had the honor of hearing from key public and private sector leaders on this very topic. Watch the video to catch remarks from MassDOT's Jonathan Gulliver, Jim Carreira of BOSTON SAND & GRAVEL CO, Office of Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, WS Development's Yanni Tsipis, United Steelworkers (USW) Emil Ramirez, and Justina Gallegos of White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. #KeepBuilding #cleancement #infrastructure #sustainableconstruction

A very insightful report on the evolving cement demand landscape and approaches for meeting this while decarbonizing the material's production. It importantly noted the role — and the constraints — of carbon capture and storage (CCS) for decarbonizing cement. CCS is currently the only way to get to net-zero cement, but it comes at a cost. CCS doubles the energy intensity, cost, and logistical complexity of cement production, making it a helpful near-term "bucket" type of tool to catch the leaky spigot of carbon, but not an enduring solution. Sublime designed our next-generation process for making cement to replace the kiln, without increasing the embodied energy and logistical complexity of cement making. Our proven pollution-avoiding technology enables the swift and massive scale-up we need to address cement emissions globally for our post-carbon future.
Very interesting white paper released by the World Cement Association on global-outlook for demand for cement and clinker! Key take-aways in my view: 👉 Recognition of the key (disruptive) drivers to speed up #cement and #concrete decarbonisation. We are talking about low #clinker solutions (SCMs) AND(!) #clinker-free solutions. Growth in SCM availability projected to surpass #IEA models 👏 and clinker-free cements potentially taking up 22% of the market (in contrast: traditional roadmaps at max talk about 5%) 👉 Recognition that #CCS should be avoided as much as possible. To quote the paper. " The worst option to reduce carbon emissions is CCS. It is expensive and energy intensive" (pag 10), hence the critical importance to have forecasts right on demand of clinker. This is really the kind of debate #cement and #concrete urgently needs at this stage of the transition. We need to think beyond existing roadmaps. This is also why with ECOS and the Alliance for Low-Carbon Cement & Concrete we are committed to bring material innovation front and center in the debate. Great to see World Cement Association kicking of the debate! Publication sits here: https://lnkd.in/eZn__WC2
