🔌Verra has opened a public consultation on a minor revision to Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) TOOL07: Tool to calculate the emission factor for an electricity system, v7.0. The consultation is open through Monday, November 4, 2024. ➡️ The revised tool will be published in Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. The proposed updates aim to align the tool with the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs) Assessment Framework of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM). 💡 TOOL07 is used to calculate the grid emission factor for grid-connected renewable energy projects, among others. ➡️ This week, Andrew Howard, Verra's senior director, climate policy and strategy, will be speaking at the 24th annual workshop on greenhouse gas emissions trading organized by the @International Energy Agency (IEA), IETA, and EPRI. 📢 Projects Open for Public Comment Period! 🌍 Every project seeking to register in a Verra standards program undergoes a 30-day public comment period. The public comment periods for the projects listed here opened during the week of September 23. This week's listing includes projects seeking registration and/or verification in the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards (CCBS) Programs. The projects are located in various geographic regions, including Brazil, South Korea, and Madagascar, to name a few. These projects are implementing a broad range of activities, including activities related to Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR), methane reduction, and electrical vehicle (EV) charging systems. Impact Highlight: Collectively, these projects could reduce and/or remove 554,304 tCO2e annually from the atmosphere, helping to accelerate our transition to a more sustainable future. Verra recently conducted a session as part of the Navigating Policy Developments and Trends in Carbon Markets course, organized by the NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions.     The Verra-hosted session was titled "The VCS Program and the Roles of Standards in Compliance and Voluntary Carbon Markets." Win Sim Tan, Verra’s regional representative for East and Southeast Asia, introduced attendees to Verra and its flagship Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. He also provided information on voluntary versus compliance markets, different types of carbon projects, and Verra’s Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards (CCBS) Program and Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta) Program. 🍎 Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, designated by the United Nations General Assembly.    Food loss and waste (FLW) is a major contributor to climate change. Globally, food systems are responsible for around 26% of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, 90% of deforestation worldwide, and the majority of biodiversity loss. Nearly one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted, meaning that the resources expended in its production (e.g., water, land, energy, labor) are likewise wasted. FLW also exacerbates issues like food insecurity.    Reducing FLW is key to mitigating climate change and global hunger, which is why Verra is prioritizing methodologies that drive these efforts forward.    In 2023, Verra released VM0046 Methodology for Reducing Food Loss and Waste. VM0046 enables projects that tackle FLW at various stages in the food supply chain to quantify the downstream emission reductions from their activities. The methodology helps those projects generate carbon credits, and the finance from selling these credits enables projects to sustain and scale up their activities.    Additionally, Verra is currently developing a methodology for sustainable food systems, which will quantify upstream emissions from reduced FLW across the food supply chain.
