The #UK's largest #salmon producer, Mowi Scotland, has partnered with experts from the Roslin Institute in a large-scale study aimed at increasing the #productivity of farmed salmon by improving their #welfare. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🧑🔬🐟🤝 🎯 Specifically, they team up in search of a solution to limit the impact and cost of #chronic #diseases associated with the sector. 🎯 The collaboration will last five years and has a budget of GBP 8.5 million (EUR 10.1 million / USD 10.5 million). 🗣️ "We seek to advance the fundamental understanding of #fish #health and robustness at multiple levels across the salmon life cycle, a proposal only possible through such a large-scale partnership with industry," Dr Nick Wade, the Roslin Institute. 🗣️ "The scientific objectives outlined are highly strategically relevant and deliver immediate translational opportunities to salmon production benefit the Scottish, UK and global salmon farming sectors, further increasing animal welfare, #profitability, #sustainability, and societal acceptance," Professor Herve Migaud, Health, Welfare and Biology Director at Mowi Scotland. 🟣🔵 More info 👉 https://lnkd.in/dQZtGdaX *Photo: Landcatch Natural Selection.

🔬 The Universidad Austral de Chile has presented the study 'In vitro Evaluation of Pretreated and Untreated Brewer's Bagasse Flour Enzymatically, with Potential Application in Functional Fish Diets' to improve farmed salmonids #health. 🥼 Researchers have developed a pretreatment to analyze the possible #toxic, pro-inflammatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects of brewer's bagasse flour when used as a supplement in #salmonid #fish #diets. 👩⚕️ Dr. María Cristina Ravanal, a faculty member at the Institute of Science and Technology of Food: "We have studied how to extract bioactive #compounds from brewer's bagasse. This allowed us to efficiently obtain phenolic acids and prebiotics." 💡 In conclusion, Ravanal explains that the extract stimulates the immune response and modulates genes related to oxidative #stress, while also showing #antimicrobial effects against Piscirickettsia salmonis, a significant #pathogen in #aquaculture. https://lnkd.in/de2TMV9t

🐟 💙 Bluefront Equity has announced an investment in the venture capital firm Builders Vision, founded by Lukas Walton, to promote solutions that foster long-term #sustainability in the global #seafood #industry. 💰 This investment is part of the Bluefront Capital II #fund, which aims to develop #sustainable #solutions for the global seafood industry. In its first round, $62 million was raised in 2021. 🐟 Mowi takes over majority ownership of northern #Norway #salmonfarmer Nova Sea AS, increasing its stake from 49% to 95%. 💰 This morning #Mowi confirmed it is buying out majority owner Vigner Olaisen AS's 46% stake through a settlement of 30% in Mowi shares and 70% in cash, in a transaction valued at NOK 7.4 billion (EUR 625 million). 📢 Announcing the deal this morning, Mowi CEO Ivan Vindheim said: "Nova Sea is a frontrunner in the #Norwegian #aquacultureindustry and is known for its excellent biological performance and industry-leading margins." 💬 "Over 50 years, the company and the Olaisen family have invested in the organisation and developed it into an impressive, fully integrated operation.
