We've just wrapped up our 12-month Associate Engineering Program! 🥳 Launched at the beginning of the year, this initiative was a bold step for us. We onboarded 12 amazing South African engineers, fresh in their careers, and going on an ambitious journey together. Our engineering team served not only as mentors but as collaborators, guiding them through their journey into the tech world. Throughout the year, they got stuck into projects, joined various squads, pushed their problem-solving skills, and overall gained super valuable hands-on experience 🙌. The growth we've seen has been inspiring. As they step into engineering positions in January 2024, we're not just celebrating their success but also the growth culture we're building here at Zepz. 🎉 Celebrating ZepzFest 2023 🎉 What a day we had! We just wrapped up our very first virtual ZepzFest – a day dedicated to gratitude, looking back at our achievements, and some holiday cheer! 🚀 Tech Talk: We kicked off with a product session, diving into the cool tech and product advancements we've achieved with our brands, WorldRemit and Sendwave (International Remittance), this year. We've made so much progress! 💜 Customer Connections: Next, an inspiring customer session! We were thrilled to have two fantastic users from Haiti join us for a deep dive into their experiences with Sendwave. Their insights on what they love about the app and areas for our growth were really useful. A big thank you to them for sharing their journey with us! 🎉 Cebu Team Celebration: Shoutout to our amazing Cebu team! They brought extra cheer by giving out thank-you hampers and brightening their office with festive jumpers. Your spirit is contagious! 🎯 Quiz Time: Post-lunch, we switched gears for a lively pub-style quiz. Our competitive spirits were high, and it was the perfect lead-up to our final All-Hands meeting of the year. This session was a big reflection on cross-team highlights from 2023 – truly, a year to remember! 🏆 Celebrating Our Stars: The day wrapped up with an Employee Award ceremony and an in-house DJ session. We celebrated 10 exceptional team members who embody our commitments and also bring fun to our remote-first world – yes, including those who have the best memes game! DMA Gold Award Win! 🥳 Our "I*mMigrant" campaign, won Gold in the Financial Services category and Silver in the Inclusive Marketing category at the DMA (Data & Marketing Association) UK awards. 🏆 We launched this campaign six months ago as a tribute to the efforts migrants have made in the world, the people at the heart of what we do. Introducing you to our amazing Software Engineer, Adeyinka Adegbenro, based in Nigeria 🇳🇬. Learn more about her through our mini-interview below: 1️⃣ What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering? My university made every fresher take a programming course for two semesters. That was my first introduction to programming. I realized that I loved logic and problem-solving! After my undergraduate studies, I decided to learn more about how to pursue a career in software engineering and the rest is history. 2️⃣ What attracted you to Zepz and how does your personal identity align with our vision? I was attracted to Zepz because of what I had heard about the company from what employees had said online. During my interview, after asking so many, I was further encouraged by the company’s willingness to welcome people from all walks of life despite disability, gender, and orientation. This resonated deeply with me as a deaf person using assistive devices. 3️⃣ Given the ever-evolving nature of tech, what are some of the exciting projects or innovations you've been a part of at Zepz? I have been heavily involved in the monthly reconciliation and closing of our financial books using software to make the process as seamless as possible for the accounting teams to prepare the company for auditing and to maintain compliance with finance reporting requirements. To help stay updated with the work I do at Zepz, I often read books on popular frameworks and I am subscribed to several engineering blogs and email lists for the latest news on software tools and technologies. 4️⃣ Why, in your opinion, is gender diversity crucial in engineering and tech teams? This is super important because different genders bring their unique perspectives and experiences to the creativity and decision-making table. Engineering teams are creating products for diverse users, so it makes sense that engineering teams are a sample of the real world. Yesterday marked a significant day on our calendars - World Mental Health Day. 🌍 This day is globally recognised for uniting efforts to raise awareness, educate, and break the silence around mental health issues that many of us experience, directly or indirectly. We were truly honoured to have a virtual sit-down with the incredible Andrew Berrie, Head of Workplace Wellbeing at Mind, for a heartfelt and engaging conversation on navigating the avenues of mental health in our professional and personal lives. 🧠 Andrew shared lots of great insights and tactical approaches to managing our mental well-being with kindness and understanding. 💪🏽❤️ The Mind website hosts numerous resources that we find incredibly beneficial, in particular, the Wellness Action Plan templates, which help you understand your triggers for poor mental health and outline steps to improve it. Jade-Neve shares her journey to engineering and what drew her to Zepz. Read our mini-interview with her below. 💫 1️⃣ What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering? I felt an initial spark to go into engineering when I started playing around with user interfaces. There’s something really rewarding about making complex tech easy and fun for everyone to use! In the beginning, a bunch of developers and designers from the React Native communities showed me how exciting and impactful this field could be, and I was all in! 2️⃣ What attracted you to Zepz, and how does your personal identity align with our vision? Zepz’s vision resonated with me right away. As a developer, I believe in pushing limits, fine-tuning code, and finding the most efficient way to get things done. I love diving into quick prototypes and finding fast solutions—it’s all about constant growth and learning. Plus, I am a firm believer in tech inclusivity, which only strengthens my alignment with Zepz's commitments! 3️⃣ Given the ever-evolving nature of tech, what are some of the exciting projects or innovations you've been a part of at Zepz? It’s been a privilege being at the forefront of Zepz's innovation. Working on the WorldRemit app as a developer is a standout experience. Collaborating with a team of seasoned developers, I've not only honed my skills but have also been introduced to cutting-edge solutions that are shaping the future of digital payments.
