𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝’𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩-𝐬𝐞𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐟 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭 Scientists have found the world’s largest deep-sea coral reef off the eastern coast of the United States. The massive 6.4 acre area stretches from Miami, Florida up to Charleston, South Carolina. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) this is an area larger than the state of Vermont. Fascinating to see different skills and how multidisciplinary the tasks are when it comes to mussel reef restoration, ranging from field measurements to spatial modeling. I think #ecosystemservices and their estimation will become even more important in the future and it will be interesting to see what methodology will be applied.

Set out to predict future sea level rise 🌊 That’s the mission when researchers Martin Jakobsson and Nina Kirchner, among others, embark on an icebreaker expedition to one of the most remote fjords in northern Greenland, Victoria Fjord. By collecting field data from an environment that has not been studied before, they hope to be able to calibrate numerical models which can give a more accurate predictions on how melting glaciers will impact global sea levels. The expedition is coordinated by Polarforskningssekretariatet.

Big waves becoming more common off California as Earth warms, new research finds. Waves are getting bigger and surf at least 13 feet (about 4 meters) tall is becoming more common off California’s coast as the planet warms, according to innovative new research that tracked the increasing height from historical data gathered over the past 90 years. Oceanographer Peter Bromirski at Scripps Institution of Oceanography used the unusual method of analyzing seismic records dating back to 1931 to measure the change in wave height. Finally, after years of FESOM-C model development and challenging conditions in the Arctic, our new paper is published! We present a tool for dynamically reconstruction the Arctic Ocean, utilizing data from the MOSAiC experiment to reveal insights on temperature, salinity, and currents, enhancing our understanding of upper Arctic Ocean dynamics.
