🇪🇺 MEPs Push for 80% Collective Bargaining Coverage Across EU, European Parliament, Estelle Ceulemans https://lnkd.in/dwUDzQF5 The Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament has adopted a resolution urging the European Commission to present a directive ensuring a “just transition” for workers impacted by climate change, digital transformation, and corporate restructuring. Thank you for sharing this insightful update on the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) report on Social Dialogue and the ongoing challenges regarding freedom of association and collective bargaining. This is a critical issue in the broader context of decent work and social justice, which continues to resonate across labor movements and policy discussions globally. The report's mention of the significant gap in coverage, with roughly half of the global workforce remaining uncovered by ILO Conventions 87 and 98, speaks volumes about the work still ahead. While the high ratification rates of these Conventions are commendable, the reality remains that the implementation of these rights often lags behind the legal frameworks in many countries, especially in USA, China, and India, where ratification is still pending. The fact that national laws and practices frequently fail to meet the standards set forth by the ILO, despite the international commitments, underscores a deeply rooted challenge in ensuring that the fundamental rights of workers are not just acknowledged but actively protected. As the Committee on Freedom of Association (CFA) reports highlight, the gap between legal ratification and actual freedom of association and collective bargaining remains wide, emphasizing the critical need for both governmental and corporate accountability. However, as you rightly mention, the continued push toward upholding these essential rights is paramount, and it's essential that civil society, trade unions, policy-makers, and business leaders collaborate to ensure that the rights enshrined in these Conventions are not only legally acknowledged but are meaningfully implemented on the ground. The 2025 Report and the CFA Reports will surely offer additional data and recommendations, but the responsibility lies with all of us to continue advocating for social dialogue, labor rights, and a commitment to building a fairer and more inclusive global labor market. This is the time to transform rhetoric into action. It is heartening to see such dedication to pushing forward, and the global labor community must remain steadfast in advancing these conversations in every corner of the world. Only then can we ensure that the decent work principle is a lived reality for all workers, no matter where they are. #LaborRights #SocialDialogue #DecentWork #ILO #FreedomOfAssociation #CollectiveBargaining #WorkersRights #GlobalLaborJustice #SDG8 #CSR #UNGP #RBC
New International Labour Organization Report on Social Dialogue There is still a lot of work to be done. Some quotes from the Report: "Roughly half of the global workforce remains uncovered by ILO Conventions 87 and 98" (freedom of association and collective bargaining) "ILO data show ongoing challenges in both law and practice regarding the respect and implementation of this rights" Although the ratification rate of the Conventions 87 and 98 is high (158 for C87 and 168 for C98 out of 187 ILO member states, but both still not ratified by USA, China and India), national laws and practice remain often not up to standards. The yearly Report of the supervising Committee of Experts (new Report expected in February 2025) shows the same picture. As the (3x per year) Reports of the Committee on Freedom of Association (CFA) do. Of course much more facts, thoughts and ideas can be found in the Report. Let's keep pushing in the right direction. #decentwork #socialdialogue #sdg8 #rbc #csr #ungp #unglobalcompact

The alignment of the Labour Code with state-specific rules by March 25 is a positive step towards creating a more cohesive and efficient labor framework. This harmonization will help simplify regulations, improve compliance, and provide clearer guidelines for both businesses and workers, fostering a more productive and equitable environment across the country. It's an exciting opportunity for progress and collaboration at both the central and state levels.
