Being competitive can leave some feeling uncomfortable, but when it comes to delivering better outcomes for patients, it’s a behaviour we must embrace. This week, European leaders convene at the EU Competitiveness Council. Their mandate is clear: enhance competitiveness to fuel growth in the EU. Just discussing this topic won’t be enough; action is essential. The life sciences sector plays a pivotal role in driving investment and innovation while addressing the most pressing health challenges in society. Our strategic insights are vital, and having a seat at the table is critical to ensuring we co-create a stronger European industrial policy base. The words of my colleague, Anouk De Vroey, in the video below resonate here: “Only by placing the life sciences sector at the heart of the next EU agenda can we ensure a resilient, sustainable future for European industry and citizens.” By collaborating with policymakers, we can harness the full potential of the European Life Science sector. Standing alongside other industry leaders, we’ve therefore signed the Antwerp Declaration for a European Industrial Deal. We hope this extends into a continuous and reciprocal dialogue on how to recognize the strategic importance of the life sciences sector for Europe. The time to act is now. #StrongerTogether #IndustrialDeal #AntwerpDeclaration #EUInvestsinLife

I would like to echo these words of Kris Sterkens and Anouk De Vroey. Competitiveness is a delicate interplay between different industrial and socioeconomic aspects and requires permanent attention both at the European and Belgian level. The (bio)pharmaceutical industry is highly regulated through specific legislation and therefore deserves a tailored approach to safeguard the sector's competitiveness #pharmavalley #Belgium #EU

The German Alliance for Global Health Research was launched in 2020 with support from the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) and is set to receive funding into at least 2025. Complementing this support, from 2022-2023, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) provided additional funding to strengthen cooperation with partners in low- and middle-income countries. As this BMZ-funding phase has come to an end, we are thrilled to share the progress and impact achieved through our collaboration. 🎉 🔸A total of 61 project events were held in 8 countries with over 3400 participants, of which 98% are from LMICs. All 8 project teams have documented their results in case studies, which can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dJvvEFhi 🔸The newly launched "Meet our Partners" campaign strengthens the visibility of researchers from LMICs in the network. These initiatives have not only strengthened research partnerships but have also laid the foundation for sustainable collaboration. Inspired to drive change.   Last week, I met with the Danish Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Morten Bødskov, at a dinner hosted by Ambassador Lars Thuesen. The gathering served as a platform for Danish companies based in Ireland to discuss Irish-Danish relations and exchange best practices, with a focus on industrial and healthcare policy.   Like for Denmark, the life science industry is a cornerstone of Ireland's economy, employing 50,000 people and contributing almost €2.5 billion to Irish exports. Denmark's robust healthcare policy and renewable energy infrastructure, coupled with Ireland's world-leading enterprise policy, offers immense potential for a close alliance between the two nations.   The meeting highlighted a shared vision between us and Minister Bødskov, particularly on EU General Pharmaceutical Legislation reform and the potential for a comprehensive Life Sciences Strategy in Ireland. Inspired by Denmark's experience, we are committed to advocate for progressive healthcare reform in Ireland, including exploring the opportunity for Ireland to have its own Life Science Strategy, given the scale of the industry here.    With joint up thinking, and working collaboratively, we can drive innovation and secure a healthier future for Europe. With Denmark’s Presidency of the Council of the EU approaching next year, we look forward to working closely with the Danish Embassy to enhance Irish-Danish cooperation and continue delivering for patients living with chronic diseases at a European level.   #NovoNordisk #AHealthierIreland #AHealthierEurope #DrivingChange #MakingADifference

❗ European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study group (EHMSG) is a TOGAS partner with the responsibility of organizing the annual September stakeholder outreach conferences. January, 2024 the Board of EHMSG together with the scientific coordinator of the project M.Leja have been meeting in Porto, 🇵🇹 to plan the upcoming meeting in 2024. It was decided to have the meeting September 12, 2024 in Porto 🇵🇹 The potential conference sessions and speakers were discussed. Looking forward to this discussion and emphasize that competitiveness in the health sector must be measured in terms of patient and public health benefit, including affordable and equitable access to health innovations. How to create a European health innovation ecosystem that delivers for the people in an efficient and competitive way? How to use the public financing that goes into health systems, the product R&D value chain, and procurement (subsidies) to optimize this ecosystem for health benefit? How can public and private sectors work in synergy to achieve a shared goal of improving people's health in Europe, and beyond?
