📣 We are excited to announce the release of Contesti No. 1/2024, titled (𝐑𝐞)𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞: 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 (Firenze University Press - FUP), edited by 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢 (University of Florence), Gabriella Esposito (#Cnr_Iriss), Stefania Ragozino Ph.D. (#Cnr_Iriss , and 𝐓𝐢𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐫 𝐕𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 (BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg). 🌆As cities become more commodified, this issue positions #commons and #care as fundamental pillars for reimagining #urbanspaces. Indeed, commons - as #collectivespaces and #practices built through mutual #care and shared responsibility - can provide a powerful counterpoint to the to the fragmentation of the everyday life, brought on by capitalist dynamics 📕Through the lens of everyday life, the volume explores how small-scale, collective acts of care can resist #fragmentation, challenge #socialinequalities, and transform #urbanenvironments. 📌 Don’t miss out! CSX Community Sustainable Experiences represents the first opportunity I had to apply an academic paper totally written on my own! I'm so glad to be part of the authors who wrote about topics like communities and social innovation. In my paper, starting from design methodology and university experiences, I dived into the complex topic of community based design, an approach that decentralizes the focus from individuals (human centered design) to give answers to needs shared among multiple people with common values and goals. Source of knowledge for the paper were social studies and game theories which converge in the Community as an Onion Framework (CAAO), useful for designers and decision makers to analyze social contexts and to design new valuable ways of being a community, possibly a sustainable community. #CSX #socialinnovation #design #community #game #communitybaseddesign #sustainability PUSH. #CSX is finally out! (Link in the first comment) This publication, part of the Università degli Studi di Palermo CSX - EUROSTART research project, aims to offer a transformative vision for rural territories through the lens of citizens' experiences. It underscores the evolution from individual-centric User Experience (UX) to a broader concept of Community Experience, emphasizing a holistic, ethical approach to urban/rural development. The volume presents the main outcomes of the "Communities’ Sustainable eXperiences" (#CSX) research and the #UrbanThinkersCampus event held in the Madonie Region, Sicily, which convened over 400 participants including activists, researchers, and policymakers. Anchored by principles of the #NewEuropeanBauhaus initiative and the #NewUrbanCampaign framework, the research addressed multifaceted challenges such as sustainable communities (#People), green energy solutions (#Places), and planning policies (#Policies) through a blend of bottom-up and top-down approaches. Additionally, the book brings together 22 scientific papers developed post-symposium, each undergoing a rigorous double-blind review process. These papers reflect rich interdisciplinary discourse, offering actionable insights and strategies for sustainable, inclusive urban transformation. I need to thank Mauro Filippi and Domenico Schillaci for their support during the whole research project (please take a look to “The Madonie Misalignment: participatory budgeting insights on PNRR funded measures”). This work couldn’t be possible without the support of Università degli Studi di Palermo, Avanzi - Sostenibilità per Azioni, Farm Cultural Park, #AltralineaEdizioni and PUSH. (Emilia Pardi, Francesco Massa, Roberto Filippi, Claudia Schillaci) and particularly its great Alessandro Riva. ✅ New stage for Energypolis Campus 🏢 The first building to house the site of the Innovation Park in Sionwill soon be ready for construction. The five-storey building will embody the vision of our campus, which is linked to the Switzerland Innovation Park West EPFL and the Switzerland Innovation Foundation. 🧑🔬👩🔬Il will house laboratories, offices and workspaces for companies developing innovative projects. On site, companies will have direct access to the expertise of researchers from the HES-SO Valais-Wallis and the EPFL Valais Wallis-Wallis, as well as to state-of-the-art scientific equipment, which is ideal for facilitating the transfer of technology from the laboratory to the economic fabric. ⛓️ The Innovation Park is the final link in the value chain formed by the campus partners HES-SO Valais-Wallis, EPFL Valais Wallis and Fondation The Ark. Once operational, it will help to maximise the potential for synergies between basic research, applied research and economic valorisation. 💬 The building will be managed by Energypolis SA. One of the company's tasks is to develop the Energypolis Campus community by networking the actors of the area, while promoting interaction and synergies with the economic fabric. #innovation #economicdevelopment #switzerlandinnovation #research 📷 suter sauthier architectes sa

I recently attended a conference about how smart cities can enhance sustainability and resilience, and one of the key insights that stood out to me was the role of communities as essential sensors. Communities provide valuable data, feedback, and insights that help cities better understand local needs and drive meaningful change. However, one challenge that was highlighted is the difficulty of trusting the data and contributions from the community. It’s not just about ensuring trust in the people but about how we can trust the information that is provided. The data gathered from a diverse group of individuals might vary in quality, accuracy, or relevance, which creates a complex challenge for decision-makers. #SmartAndResilientCities #Community #DigitalTwin #UrbanHazard
We have been honored to have Isam Shahrour, President of Smart Conseil and Emeritus Professor at the University of Lille, with us for his lecture titled 'How Could the Smart City Enhance Urban Sustainability and Resilience?' as part of the 'Major Urban Challenges' lecture series within the 'Smart and Resilient Cities' program at Junia_ingénieurs. The impact of climate change, coupled with the rapid and often unchecked urbanization, poses significant challenges for the development of sustainable and resilient cities. As urban populations continue to grow and natural resources become increasingly strained, it is imperative to find solutions that balance environmental sustainability with social equity. In this context, the concept of the smart city has emerged as a promising approach to addressing these pressing challenges.
