Is natural really the green choice? 🌱 The trend in cosmetics and personal care is for natural, "clean" products derived from plants which promise to be kind to hair and skin - but are they also kind to people and planet? 🌍 The plant oils used in the cosmetics and personal care industry can be linked to a number of sustainability issues: 🌳 Deforestation 💧Water security 🧑🌾 Land use and food security 💨 Carbon emissions The sustainability of plant oils must go beyond the "natural" and "clean" buzzwords and meet both consumers' demands for sustainability and traceability, as well as legislation on, for example, deforestation. The ProTerra Foundation’s certification scheme is a long-standing and well-recognised “seal of approval”, which can be applied to raw materials – such as sugar cane – as well as to processed products or ingredients. However, the sector's activities sometimes have adverse environmental impacts, such as excessive packaging and deforestation. 🚀 Progress in Motion: 1. Companies are increasingly recognizing their environmental footprint and committing to action. 2. Examples include Henkel's goal of achieving over 30% recycled plastic in packaging by 2030 and Natura's aim to preserve millions of hectares of the Amazon rainforest. 3. Arbonne, Firmenich, Unilever, L'Oréal, and L'Occitane are also making significant commitments towards sustainability and biodiversity. 4. The sector is shifting towards offering nature-based products, with a majority planning to launch plant-based products. 5. 🌿 Kicking Off the Week with Sustainable Innovations: Alternatives to PFAS As we start this week, we must reflect on our lifestyle choices and consider more sustainable alternatives. PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) have been widely used but pose significant environmental and health risks. Fortunately, innovative companies are stepping up with eco-friendly solutions. Here are some notable alternatives: 🌱 BIO-SUSHY Project: The BIO-SUSHY project will develop innovative repellent organic and hybrid coatings to challenge widespread yet polluting per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). 📜 Nordic Paper: Offering natural greaseproof paper as an alternative to PFAS-coated paper. This uncoated paper effectively repels grease and moisture. 🧪 Solenis: Their product, TopScreen, uses alternative chemicals and has a double or single coating to form a film on paper wrapping, providing a barrier without relying on PFAS. 🌾 J&J Green Paper: Their Janus coating, developed over four years, resists moisture while meeting safety and sustainability goals. Janus uses rice plants, sugarcane, and calcium stearate as its base. 🥗 Ahlstrom: Producing vegetable parchment papers that can replace PFAS-coated materials in food packaging. 👗 Polartec and Sympatex: Utilizing PFC-free alternatives in clothing production, including materials and membranes that avoid PFAS.
