How are OEMs in the automotive industry dealing with the ongoing industry shift? What are they doing to develop, learn, and acquire new competencies? And perhaps most interestingly, what is preventing them from doing so? That’s what me and Marcus Skaric set to find out in our just-published master thesis titled “Driving Change: How Incumbent Automakers Orchestrate Learning in Business Ecosystems”. We found that OEMs are displaying an ambition to learn to a greater extent, but it has been put on the backburner and hasn’t been prioritized. As such, the majority of learning occurs spontaneously at the operational level and isn’t strategically orchestrated to any great extent. Also, legacy corporate culture and bureaucracy is the most significant barrier standing in the way of better partnerships and greater learning opportunities. The way forward for OEMs include four crucial areas of improvement: • Achieving goal alignment between OEMs and their partners, both at the start of and during the partnerships • Embracing and facilitating a shift in culture to improve compatibility with partners • Re-thinking traditional ways of working in terms of static projects and teams • Prioritizing learning on a strategic level Huge thanks to our professor Johan Frishammar, our supervisors at KPMG, Michael Dunn and Artin Levin, and all those who participated in interviews, for making this thesis possible! Nathan O'Brien | Engineering Leader in Electric Vehicle Design and Innovation | Championing Growth and Creativity in Engineering
Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for me as I conclude my journey with CNH Industrial. This experience has been one of profound learning and personal growth, filled with both challenges and triumphs. My proudest achievement was leading a diverse team of automotive engineers on the innovative project of modeling the performance and functionality of an electric tractor. This journey was significantly enhanced by the kindness of experienced CNH colleagues who were open to sharing their deep knowledge with us. While we faced challenges and resistance from some, the collaborative spirit within our team and the valuable contributions from these supportive colleagues fostered a rich learning environment. It highlighted the importance of merging fresh ideas with established wisdom, leading to new and innovative ideas and methods of working. While our vision wasn't fully realized within the short time we had at CNH, it has broadened my perspective and I hope it has similarly benefited others at CNH. As I move forward, I am looking for opportunities where I can continue to grow, contribute, and innovate, particularly in environments that value forward-thinking and the integration of technology into sustainable solutions. I am excited about the prospects of applying my skills in new contexts and am open to connections, advice, or opportunities from my network. Thank you to everyone at CNH for the journey, and here's to the next adventure, where I hope to further my exploration into the future of engineering and technology. #Engineering #Innovation #SustainableSolutions #CareerTransition #ElectricVehicles #Teamwork #ProfessionalGrowth #NewBeginnings

Too fast, too high - and definitely too far: Volkswagen and the Diesel-Scandal Despite originally pinning the failure on individual engineers, in our multi-year case study we uncovered profound systemic flaws within Volkswagen, the car-industry, and national and international politics and legal frameworks. Are you interested in a deep dive into one of the biggest corporate scandals in Germany since decades? Then check our latest case study: https://lnkd.in/eKBwe2Dr. Do not expect easy answers, but look forward to rigorous insights into the real story. Please remember: In the end, it turned out that Volkswagen has sold 11 million affected cars (fitted with defeat devices mainly in order to beat the laboratory tests) across the globe. The scandal had cost VW more than 30 bn€.
