Calling for a ceasefire of political fighting over hospital funding - now is a time for leadership. This letter addresses concerns about funding for a new hospital in Hampshire, reassuring that the plans remain on track. The Hampshire scheme has an indicative allocation of £700m - £900m from the national New Hospital Programme. The Trust and Integrated Care Board have been funded to develop detailed plans and consult with the public. The letter emphasises confidence in funding availability and encourages continued engagement in the consultation process. It outlines the standard process of submitting business cases to the Treasury for funding approval. Overall, it reaffirms the NHS commitment to the new hospital for Hampshire and urges partners and stakeholders to maintain confidence in the project. Local Borough and county councillors and election candidates, of all political parties, should wholeheartedly support this NHS transformative project for several compelling reasons. The construction of a new hospital will significantly improve healthcare infrastructure in Hampshire, ensuring better access to high-quality medical services for residents. Moreover, a modernized healthcare facility will enhance the region's reputation, attracting skilled healthcare professionals and potentially boosting tourism. By supporting this project, councillors and candidates demonstrate their commitment to the health and well-being of their constituents, contributing to the overall prosperity and vitality of the area. Despite successive governments repeating a vision of health and care services focused on communities rather than hospitals, that vision is very far from being achieved. The failure to grow and invest in primary and community health and care services ranks as one of the most significant and long-running failures of policy and implementation in the NHS and social care for more than 30 years. This is partly been due to a ‘cycle of invisibility’ for primary and community health and care services, where they are hard to quantify and easy to overlook, and hierarchies of care, with urgent problems taking priority over longer-term issues. This report from The King's Fund describes why it is not sufficient to selectively implement a few changes; the shift that is required is wholesale, including greater alignment between policy and vision, so that funding, regulation, workforce and performance policies match the intention of changing the focus of the health and care system towards primary and community health and care services. Over 2,000 hospital buildings older than the NHS England, new research reveals New research has shown over 2,000 hospital buildings across England were built before the NHS was established in 1948, Building Better Healthcare reached out to the Trusts with the highest number of these buildings in its estates. The research found that The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust in London has the highest proportion of outdated buildings in the county. Followed by Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust then Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Improving productivity is a hot topic for the NHS – an area where we’ve had proven success. At a hospital trust in the north of England, we worked with operating theatre staff to find ways of making better use of resources, without any detriment to the service. This involving reviewing ways of working and developing a better understanding of the staffing needed. As a result of our support, the average number of cases on each scheduled operating list rose from 2.1 to 3.6 – freeing up an entire operating theatre for other work. We’ll always be happy to hear from other NHS Trusts or systems seeking similar improvements. #NHS #productivity #efficiency #workforceplanning

Is it time we start insisting on demonstrable outcomes against government grants? In the last 10 years we have seen enormous amounts of taxpayer funds distributed to the Aged Care sector in the way of commonwealth and state grants yet little improvement or positive outcomes have materialised. There is also a significant conflict of interest in a number of the transactions. $15 million provided to a culturally specific aged care provider in Sydney to build a nursing home that has never been built. $5 million given to a private company to sell their pain assessment device. $5 million to a celebrity cook. Millions provided to one company who then pays their sister company to run conferences (so effectively paying itself). Millions provided to build more aged care facilities yet we are told building applications have plummeted. #agedcare #agedcareaustralia
