Back in the day, Vickers & Benson was the Rethink/Zulu/NFA/Fuse of its time. Independent. Canadian. Integrated. Great people. And huge.
V&B was historic - it created the first ever tv ad in Canada for GM in the 50’s. Later, it ran the Ford business better than any other agency ever, it took Loblaws from a bit player to category dominance, it created an anthem for Carling Red Cap Beer, it got people to eat a LOT more cheese, it helped elect P.E. Trudeau and Jean Chretien, it built tourism to Canada, then Ontario and then Toronto. V&B sold a ton of Big Macs, got people to bank with BMO and even created the 1972 Russia-Canada hockey series and designed the Canadian jersey with the large maple leaf emblazoned across the front. Yes, an ad agency did that.
Terry O’Malley was the CEO and Creative Director in V&B’s heyday and since retiring has written many personal books/essays about his time in advertising. He sends them to friends and business associates with the help of his long time colleague, Kathy Bertrand aka Bert. I cherish them.
I’d like to share some of his folksy, practical advice (Terry approved) as I believe the fundamentals of our business haven't changed and this insights and stories may help people new to the ad biz better understand some of the 101's of their craft.
All you kids out there? - This is your oft promised but sorry-the-budget-got-cut training program. Savvy ad veterans? You will read these and simply nod your head knowingly. Some are dead simple. Some will make you smile. Some will make you think and if you were at V&B or know Terry, some of you will be able to hear his words.
So welcome to Terry’s Takeaways. I will post some of these nuggets on a regular basis and invite you to comment or share stories so that we don’t lose some of the wisdom that shaped our business and enabled the Rethinks/Zulus/NFAs and Fuses to blossom. (The first one is posted in the comments) Hope you enjoy!
