Investment in clean #hydrogen has tripled last year to over $10 billion, according to BloombergNEF's Energy Transition Investment Trends 2024 report published today. If you count all the hydrogen-related projects, like #steel, #ammonia, #CCS, #solar, #wind, #fuelcell vehicles, more than $30 billion was invested in hydrogen last year. That's a very encouraging growth for the industry, but it's good to put things into perspective. The total energy transition #investment in 2023 was $1.77 trillion, so hydrogen accounted for a mere 0.6% of that total. Electrified transport, #renewable energy and #power #grids accounted for the vast majority of those $1.77 trillion. Our modeling suggests we would need to see $3.4 trillion invested into hydrogen by 2050 to reach net zero. So 2023 got us 0.3% of the way. Interesting to see that there are quite some hurdles to realize these projects but these hurdles do not stop projects from being announced.

India’s Milestone: First Hydrogen Bus Reaches Leh in Landmark Green Mobility Project • On August 17, 2023, the #first hydrogen bus reached #Leh for field trials and tests. • India’s inaugural use of hydrogen #buses on public roads. • #NTPC is establishing a Hydrogen #FuellingStation, #SolarPlant, and providing 5 #FuelCell buses for Leh. • The Green Hydrogen #Mobility Project is located at 11,562 ft with a 1.7 MW Solar plant. • Buses are designed for sub-zero temperatures and high altitudes. • NTPC aims for 60 GW of Renewable Energy by 2032, focusing on Green Hydrogen and Energy Storage. #greenhydrogen #cleantransport #ntpc

We consume 100-120 million tonnes of very dirty hydrogen annually, mainly for ammonia production. When we have replaced the last molecule for this purpose with green hydrogen, and thrown in a few tens of millions of tonnes for the steel industry or for chemical processes, for example, then it will be time to start thinking about hydrogen as an energy carrier. #hydrogen #renewable #green #energy
