Does the US really have the most favourable funding environment for sustainable aviation? 🤔 The #US is often cited as having a much more favourable environment than Europe for #sustainableaviation innovation in terms of financial measures. However, some major funding announcements from the past month may paint a clearer picture... 👉 The EU unveiled €424 million in funding for alternative fuels infrastructure in support of key #mobility policies such as the #ReFuelEU Aviation mandate. 👉 The UK, meanwhile, announced an additional £200 million (€232 million) in green funding for its #aerospace sector in its Spring Budget, just as it celebrated a cumulative £3.6 BILLION in public & private funding for aerospace innovation over the last decade via the great work of the Aerospace Technology Institute, with a further £5.35 million for technical support and funding announced alongside the long-awaited UK SAF Mandate late last week. The US' Inflation Reduction Act has offered a lot of 'carrots' for activity in this space (with a new tax credit model for its sustainable aviation fuel subsidy programme expected to be launched this week). However, European activities - especially mandates - are also driving action... and it's clearly not all 'sticks' as seen from some large figures being made available. Ultimately, tackling the huge challenge of reaching #netzero aviation will require a concerted, accelerated effort between public and private sector actors. It can be difficult to keep track of the public #funding opportunities available, so our aviation team at Climate Catalyst have built a database of funding for #aviation in #Europe. It was a real pleasure joining the panel on "How can the Power to Liquids industry drive forward and scale over the next two decades" at Sustainable Aviation Futures' SAF Congress yesterday! Together with esteemed colleagues Jo Dardenne, Aviation Director, Transport & Environment (T&E), Dan Matuszak, Chief Technology Officer, Aviation Climate Taskforce, Benoit Decourt, co-founder and Partner for Products, Sustainability, and Public Affairs at Elyse Energy and moderated by Tudy Bernier, Policy Director, CO2 Value Europe, we discussed, among others: 💧 We don't get to a scaled-up Power to Liquids (PtL) industry without serious collaboration - and ultimately co-funding - across the private and public sectors, with participation from CSOs like SASHA that ensure EU policies remain ambitious. 🤝 Such a collaborative approach must dovetail on EU policies that not only drive funds to the right places but also inspire and incentivise private investment to facilitate innovation. First and foremost such financing must be directed to hydrogen-derived e-fuels as the only truly sustainable aviation solution. ♻ We are less than a generation from our climate targets' deadline. The time is now to invest and innovate. EU regulations like Refuel EU are not as ambitious as we would like them to be, but we should view them not as *maximum* standards but bare *minimum* standards. #SAF #SustainableAviationFuels #DecarboniseAviation #efuels #aviation #climate #environment

💡Can we reach our 2050 climate goals? The aviation industry faces significant challenges in achieving climate-friendly or even climate-neutral flying by 2050, according to a report from the Office for Technology Assessment at the German Bundestag (TAB). The report emphasizes the need for a mix of technologies: 🔌electric propulsion 🛫sustainable fuels 🌿green hydrogen ⛽fuel optimization ✈️aircraft efficiency improvements However, achieving climate-neutral aviation by 2050 seems unlikely without more drastic measures such as taxation or quotas. Despite efforts to develop sustainable aviation fuels and alternative propulsion technologies, significant hurdles remain, including technical complexity, scalability, and infrastructure challenges. At CAPHENIA, we're preparing for our debut in the sustainable aviation fuel industry with our renewable kerosene! Get ready to take-off with us! Juan Carlos Salazar IWG believes that Aviation has the potential to lead the way in achieving Net-Zero by 2050. However, relying solely on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) may not be enough. IWG is on its mission to make the skies cleaner and greener with a proven solution such as the IWG Pre-Select System, a real game changer! Smart collaboration is key to climate change. The IWG Pre-Select not only reduces up to 400 pounds of water weight per flight, CO2 and fuel burn but also adds significant savings to the industry. Effective water weight management control is the secret to overcoming environmental challenges and IWG is at the forefront of this revolution! more here https://lnkd.in/gJmSuXN #netzer2050 #sustainability #waterweight #smartcollaboaration #together
At the #ICAO, we #envisionthefuture of a sustainable air transport network that connects the world for the benefit of all people! In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (#sdgs2030), the International Civil Aviation Organization places a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship, aiming to drastically reduce the aviation sector's carbon footprint and supporting the achievement of the global long term aspirational goal (LTAG) of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, contributing to the global fight against climate change. This commitment to sustainability goes hand in hand with our efforts to enhance aviation safety and security, recognizing that these are foundational elements of a thriving aviation community. I'm looking forward to the media coverage of the upcoming 2024 ICAO Symposium on Non-CO2 #Aviation Emissions this September in Montreal. This promises to be a critical gathering for driving collaborative solutions around aviation's environmental impacts beyond just CO2. While carbon emissions have been the primary focus of aviation’s #climateaction to date, there are also significant climate effects from other aviation emissions like contrails, particulates, and more. Addressing these non-CO2 factors is pivotal for making flight truly sustainable long-term. What makes this symposium particularly noteworthy is the range of stakeholders it is convening - civil aviation authorities, environmental groups, climate researchers, manufacturers, and more. By bringing together these interdisciplinary perspectives, ICAO aims to holistically assess the scientific knowledge, identify gaps, and align on potential mitigation approaches. Too often these types of major environmental challenges get siloed. An integrated, cross-sectoral effort is required to make substantive progress. Events like this symposium that foster open sharing of expertise across aviation, climate science, policy, and business are vital for developing comprehensive solutions. This is a terrific opportunity for journalists to hear from the various experts. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for any assistance with media accreditation or any further details.

The executive summary outlines the aviation industry's monumental challenge of transitioning to net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Various organizations, including International Air Transport Association (IATA) International Energy Agency (IEA) International Civil Aviation Organization and ATAG, have developed roadmaps to achieve this goal, each with unique pathways and strategies. Key findings from a comprehensive review of fourteen leading roadmaps include the significant role of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in emissions reduction, uncertainty surrounding hydrogen and battery-powered aircraft, and the necessity of market-based measures and carbon removal technologies to bridge the emissions gap. The report aims to help stakeholders better understand and compare these diverse pathways for aviation decarbonization.
