🌱🍯 Plant-based honey enters the European market. California-based startup MeliBio is making its EU debut as part of a $10 million, four-year deal with Narayan Foods. The partnership aims to bring Melibio's plant-based honey to 75,000 stores across Europe, starting with Austria, Switzerland, and the UK. The bee-free sweetener will be sold under ALDI's Just Veg! private label brand in HOFER Österreich stores in Austria and Switzerland, and under the Better Foodie brand in the UK. “The first versions of our product are 100% plant-based, inspired by light clover honey and acacia honey,” cofounder and CEO Darko Mandich tells AgFunderNews. “But we are also working on proprietary precision fermentation technology that more closely replicates the [multistep enzymatic] process that bees use to convert nectar into honey.” Learn more about this development here: https://lnkd.in/g3hEU6aj #ForwardFooding #plantbased #altprotein #innovation #foodtech #biotech #sustainability #foodsystems

We’re excited to share that Wavemaker Impact's portfolio company, Elevate Foods, has qualified as one of only nine finalists in this year’s Food Tech World Cup. Elevate Foods is South Asia’s first company dedicated to uplifting Indian farm-gate processors and facilitating access to global markets. Addressing food waste and food loss is crucial to decarbonising agri-food emissions in the Asia-Pacific region (APAC). Elevate Foods leverages a necessary solution for better food safety and waste reduction, given the logistics involved in food supply chains across non-homogenous regions. Elevate Foods is South Asia’s pioneering enterprise focused on empowering Indian farm-gate processors and opening pathways to global markets. By tackling food waste and loss, the company significantly reduces agri-food emissions across APAC. The logistics complexities inherent in diverse, non-homogenous areas make this effort particularly crucial. Elevate Foods will pitch live at the HackSummit, Europe’s largest gathering of Climate and Food Builders, Investors, and Limited Partners. The Summit will be held from June 13-14 in Lausanne, Switzerland. Good luck, Gayatri Bhatia and the rest of the team! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eVJCXvYK

🌎🍫🤝 FoodTech 500 alum secures funding from food giant to accelerate production of its cocoa-free chocolate. German food manufacturer DöhlerGroup has invested in UK startup NuKoKo, which is developing cocoa-free chocolate made from fava beans. Nukoko plans to launch its bean-to-bar chocolate in 2025, with Döhler helping to scale up production. Climate change is reducing cocoa supply and raising prices, making alternatives like fava beans more attractive. Nukoko's chocolate is produced through fermentation and it yields 90% fewer emissions and contains 40% less sugar than traditional chocolate. Nukoko’s innovation has gained attention, earning a spot in the IndieBio accelerator and our very own FoodTech 500 list. 🇬🇧🌾 “The UK is one of the most vibrant hubs for the sector alongside Silicon Valley, Tel Aviv, New York and Singapore,” Forward Fooding Co-Founder, Max Leveau Nearly 800 AgriFoodTech companies are operating in the UK, making it a global leader in the sector. According to our FoodTech Data Navigator, the UK is second only to the US in terms of the number of AgriFoodTech companies working on a wide array of innovations. The UK’s FoodTech ecosystem is distinguished by its broad distribution across various sub-sectors rather than a single area of specialization. This diversification, combined with significant investor interest and substantial capital, has led to robust growth and innovation. UK-based FoodTech startups attracted 10.5% of global AgriFoodTech investments in 2023, with notable investments in meat alternatives and cultivated pork. However, challenges persist, particularly in regulatory approval processes that lag behind countries like Singapore. But despite this hurdle, the UK remains a leader in FoodTech innovation, with many companies making significant strides in sustainable ingredients and meat alternatives. Some of these startups include: 👉 The Supplant Company, Tom Simmons 👉 Adamo Foods, Pierre Dupuis 👉 Hoxton Farms, Ed Steele 👉 IMPOSSIBREW®, Mark Wong 🍺🔄 👉 Clean Food Group, Alex Neves 👉 Zya, Josh Sauer, PhD 👉 JUX Food, Anna Wood 👉 Flybox®, Larry Kotch Recent regulatory updates and ongoing investor interest suggest a promising future for the UK's food tech sector, bolstered by an entrepreneurial spirit, a supportive consumer base, and strategic government initiatives. 🥑 #Foodtech in Finland in 2023 by #Tesi vs the European Foodtech map in 2016 Foodtech industry is definitely gaining momentum, having evolved into a diverse mix of companies, addressing all the different parts of the food value chain. The Finnish scene has grown considerably as well, with players like VTT driving the EIT Food program and Nordic Foodtech VC as the first industry-specific investor in the country. The latest news support the trend: for example, Enifer securing over €12M in grants from Business Finland for its mycoprotein factory today (the startup uses sidestream raw materials as feedstock for mycoprotein, producing a dry ingredient that can be infused into livestock, pet and human-grade food products). Or Solar Foods raising €8M just a few months ago in Nov 2023 to develop food from thin air (the startup has developed a proprietary microbe that feeds on carbon dioxide and hydrogen to grow a high-protein food ingredient called Solein that can be grown anywhere We always say it's important to put things into a perspective, so we wanted you to look at the Finnish foodtech map, shared by Tesi in their 2023 FoodTech study (great work, as always!) and compare it to the same map of Europe in 2026, published by Dealroom.co. Quite a change in less than 10 years! The difference in the number of players is obvious as well as the evolution of the landscape: in 2016 most of the startups were focused on delivery. Meanwhile, we are preparing a bigger article on the foodtech industry so stay tuned! #foodtech #finland #agtech #newproteins #tesi
