SVP, Academic Affairs & Professional Credentials at AHIMA ✨ Health Informatics and Information Management Expert ✨American College of Health Data Management Executive Fellow ✨Workforce Development Advocate
There are two things that I am extremely passionate about- diversifying the health informatics and information management workforce and advocating for health informatics and information professionals that struggle to find gainful employment because of their background. There were some meaningful responses to my previous post. Valid points were made about what needs to be done to have discussions and create solutions for both populations. There were also some responses that were very subjective. This was not an attack on anyone or a question of expertise. This discussion was and is meant to shed light on the employment disparities in the field and possibly come up with solutions to help both populations move toward a better future. At the end of the day, WE ARE ALL HIGHLY SKILLED. We just need to remove the bias and barriers impacting forward progress. #IAmHighlySkilled #WeAreHighlySkilled

As the nation grapples with a growing physician shortage, rural areas, like northern Alaska, face an even more pronounced deficit. Recruitment efforts by rural healthcare organizations highlight the advantages of rural physician jobs, such as competitive salaries, signing bonuses, and a broader scope of practice. However, thriving in rural medicine requires unique attributes. Rural physicians often serve as community leaders, participating in town events and engaging with residents personally and professionally. Success in rural healthcare requires physicians to integrate into small-town life and readily assume leadership roles. A willingness to embrace the community is imperative. Adaptability and flexibility are also key traits, given the unpredictable nature of rural practices. Providers need to be comfortable with change and be resourceful enough to chart a new course quickly when necessary. They must proactively seek solutions and creatively address challenges. Providers must be confident in their ability to practice within the full scope of their specialty, and sometimes at the top of their license. Specialists are often miles away. Teamwork is also vital as rural providers must collaborate and make sacrifices for their entire team. While rural provider opportunities often offer numerous benefits, they aren't universally suitable. Successful candidiates are adequately trained, team-oriented, adaptable, resourceful, and ready to embrace the unique aspects of small-town life. I don't write lengthy posts on LinkedIn often, but with a recent change, I've been reflecting on where I've arrived in my career and wanted to get a few thoughts into words. For over 15 years, I've been a part of the healthcare IT services world. While I have never been bedside providing patient care, it's never been far from my mind that the work I do impacts patients. I've been privileged to work inside hospitals and witness the positive effects of my efforts many times. When I worked full-time in a hospital, I saw, daily, the importance and potential impact of working in healthcare, even in an ancillary role. On more than one occasion, I have seen someone having the best day of their life in one part of the hospital, and someone else having the worst day of theirs in another. Tragedy and joy sometimes share an adjoining wall, and I've witnessed the clinicians and caregivers working with patients navigating the reality of the spectrum of human health. Working in a community hospital for so long, I encountered friends receiving care for a variety of reasons, often sharing a laugh, or wishing them well. I also unknowingly spent my time one Tuesday working whatever task or ticket needed resolving, while a close personal mentor passed away in a room somewhere in the same building. The reality of working in a hospital setting, especially when you've not spent years preparing for working in healthcare, is often unclear. If you're lucky, you come to realize that even the seemingly small tasks required in healthcare should be viewed as moving toward one goal: patient care. I have chosen to view my career as indirect patient care. I assist the staff that provide direct care. Even now with the software that I've helped produce and maintain, I know that at the end of the chain, the job of clinicians gets a little easier. Disruptions are minimized, and in the best case, clinician experience improves and so do the patient outcomes. I don't remember when I wrote my LinkedIn "About" section and I’m probably never going to change it: I like to fix things and help people. I'm going to continue doing that now as part of Tempo Technology Services by Ovation Healthcare. They believe, as I believe, that at the end of the day, helping hospitals helps patients. #OvationHealthcare #Hospitals #HealthIT

🚀 Unlocking the potential of healthcare innovation: Insights from Germany's health executives and clinicians reveal critical factors driving workforce shortages and innovative responses to address them. Here's what we learned: 🔹 Hierarchies in the medical field can impact job satisfaction and retention, highlighting the importance of autonomy and collaboration for healthcare professionals 🔹 Challenges in Germany's healthcare landscape include the retirement of baby boomers, difficulty attracting workers to rural areas, and poor reimbursement for virtual care and remote patient monitoring. 🔹 Despite these hurdles, health systems are innovating to bridge the gaps. Initiatives such as establishing telemedicine centers and providing digital self-help tools for patients in psychiatry are transforming healthcare delivery. EDLIGO plays a crucial role in supporting healthcare organizations to overcome these challenges. EDLIGO empowers organizations to identify skills gaps, foster leadership, and boost engagement among their workforce. Together, we can navigate workforce shortages and drive meaningful change in healthcare delivery. 💼💡 #HealthcareInnovation #WorkforceShortages #DigitalTransformation #EDLIGO #Healthcare #talentmanagement

We appreciate Christine Sumner MSN RN, Senior Director – OptimumHIT Career Path Services at Optimum Healthcare IT, and James Shurman Williams Jr. (he, him, él), Vice President, Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion at UChicago Medicine | Urban Health Initiative for their inspiring discussions around The Anatomy of a Successful DE&I Structure in Healthcare Organizations. James described the ideal DE&I-focused task force/committee as a 2-sided initiative: 1) A committee that holds the entire organization accountable for specific objectives, goals, and metrics in a strategic equity plan through such avenues as providing equity consultations within the organization, and 2) an IT/IS task force that concentrates efforts within the IT infrastructure to address organizational challenges and how IT can assist in overcoming them. He shared that “the IT Team services all of us. I rely on our IT Team for a number of things—analytics, machine learning, AI that is equitable, setting up infrastructure, uptime, and everything…Equitable integration is the key and that’s the way we [our IT Team] helps the organization to thrive.” As the head of the Optimum CareerPath, Christine shared a few considerations regarding the implementation of the sort of mentorship programs that promote diversity in HIT: “Beyond training for implicit bias…[we take our cohorts through scenario-based training] by taking a patient through a clinical journey, and [addressing] how you as an IT analyst can affect that patient care from start to end.” The conversations and lessons from this webinar helped us as dissect the critical components necessary for inclusive and equitable efforts at healthcare organizations for both the workforce and the patients they serve. 🗓️ Save the date for our next CHIME DE&I Dialogues webinar: Communication: Language Describing Populations Served, Barriers, and More, September 29th, at 12 PM EST.
