As a Connector partner of the American-Made Program, ISTC is so proud to see that two #Illinois teams were recently awarded Community Energy Innovation Prizes in the Manufacturing Ecosystem track! The Community Energy Innovation Prize supports capacity building, innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development related to clean energy and climate for disadvantaged communities in accordance with the Justice40 Initiative. The prize has three tracks, each with distinct goals and submission requirements: Collegiate, Clean Energy Ecosystem, and Manufacturing Ecosystem. Clean Tech Innovation Network (Chicago, Illinois) and Southland Development Authority Team (Tinley Park, Illinois) won in the Manufacturing Ecosystem Track. In this track, competitors were asked to develop ideas around manufacturing-related education, entrepreneurship, resilient supply chains, and more. Competitors in both tracks were required to focus their impact plans on engaging with and benefitting underserved communities. https://lnkd.in/g62Vxe_T

As the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Energy and Environment Program reaches its 10-year anniversary, Evan Michelson and Isabella Gee reflect on lessons learned from a decade of grantmaking for research aimed at decarbonizing energy systems. “How have we improved the world? How can we use evaluation to achieve our programmatic goals and to refine how we do grantmaking in the future? What have we learned that could be useful to other funders in this area?” Read what their multiyear impact assessment found: https://lnkd.in/gK4skPhg #sciencephilanthropy

Post 2 of 4: In April 2024, Lindsay Edelman, Meet Muchhala (he/him) and I had the opportunity to present on our Eco-Entrepreneurship project: Green Credit, an online solar subscription platform, supporting the development of community solar in California. We spent a year conducting market research, getting out into the community to discover challenges that low and middle income Californians experience with access to energy options, and created a robust business plan to meet those challenges. All of that is compiled into our 70+ page final report. We did a 30 min presentation (photo below) to an audience of Bren professors, students, and business leaders we invited to attend. I incorporate a lot of what I learned from my summer at Collective Energy Company working with Andrew MacCalla into our project, the central tenant being: Clean energy should be #abundant, #affordable, and #accessible. The world is undergoing an energy transition right now, fueled by the development and deployment of new clean energy technologies. The pace of innovation at the heart of this transition is happening faster than many people (including me!) dared hope. The progress makes me optimistic about the future—and excited about the role that American communities will play, especially in places like Texas. Breakthrough Energy and I have invested more than $130 million into Texas-based entrepreneurs, institutions, and projects. It’s a big bet, but it’s one I’m confident in. https://lnkd.in/e2RcZ-RP

Leaders need to avoid the trap of focusing on selective positives that make us all feel good, such as the boom in renewables, efficiency gains and green innovations. Here's where's to home in.
