As passenger numbers in rail transport increase, the demands on the mode of transport are also changing. Long-distance journeys should be as fast as possible from A to B and trains should be designed to be barrier-free. The Deutsches Zentrum für Schienenverkehrsforschung (DZSF) will soon be conducting research into how these requirements can be met and to what extent concepts such as #Hyperloop are already fully developed. There is a really good essay on the CER (Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies) website about the importance of customers playing an active role in rail design and development. In getting to net zero and encouraging modal shift, rail needs to ensure that innovation isn't simply led by technology, but is informed by service users and passengers. As a facility for world class rail research, testing and innovation of rolling stock, infrastructure and cutting edge new technologies, the Global Centre Of Rail Excellence will be an important platform from which innovation and new low carbon technologies can be developed for tomorrow's transport and green mobility systems across the UK, Europe, the Middle East and further afield. Evening Network, I wanted to share the Rail Forum brochure published today, which includes a number of case studies of how the supply chain continues to innovate and drive forward with quality solutions, critical to the operation of UK Rail. Reiterating Elaine Clark's opening statement and support and citing Robert Ampomah, B. Eng (Hons), 'I believe in the importance of building and fostering a strong collaborative partnership with our supply chain.' The brochure provides and demonstrates the collective leadership, experience and competence in a 21st century railway. Great work Rail Forum and the other contributors. Innovating for a Safer, More Efficient Railway: A Collaborative Milestone: Not trying to be too biased, I will highlight from the latest Rail Forum publication, featuring Belvoir Rail Ltd collaboration with Northern Trains, Modux, and Network Rail. Together, we're tackling the rail industry's most pressing challenges, these being safety and efficiency. The project highlights our innovation, integrating advanced technologies like radar, lidar, and intelligent cameras on passenger trains, enabling an unprecedented level of infrastructure monitoring. This collective effort not only elevates maintenance to real-time and predictive levels but also significantly enhances network reliability and safety. This initiative is more than a project; it's a pivotal shift towards a new era of railway infrastructure maintenance. By harnessing 2TB of daily data and sophisticated analytics, we're proactively identifying and addressing potential faults before they impact operations. Over the past decade, there has been a notable shift in the landscape surrounding Very Light Rail (VLR) and Light Rail, globally. This transformation, driven by advancement in lightweighting technology and rail infrastructure, has been particularly influenced by the significant cost savings offered by VLR projects. Sam Sharp, TDI’s Commercial Director – International shares, “There is a growing awareness of the substantial savings VLR offers over heavy rail solutions.
