This is interesting, potential flows of 1.4 GW between GB and Germany should help alleviate some of the transmission issues in Germany with wind being up North and having trouble being transported to demand centers. Adding 1.4 GW of additional flexibility will be expensive, because Germany has some security-of-supply fears during winter months in light of coal and lignite closures, but GB also sees its highest prices in winter. I'm a little surprised that this project has not been put on hold due to uncertain impacts of CBAM though. CBAM may limit the benefits of the cable in the direction from GB to DE, even though GB is likely to have been slightly less carbon intensive in the period 7 years to 2 years before commissioning of this cable. Germany adds another cross-border flow and an explicitly auctioned one at that. Good news for energy nerds!

Grappig dat de geplaatste windparken voor de kust dus niet zorgen voor duurzame stroom IN Duitsland want we transporteren gewoon het naar Engeland. Dan had je beter de windparken in Engeland kunnen neerzetten om die dure kabel te besparen. Of Je had een kabel door Duitsland naar het zuiden moeten leggen waar de windstroom ook echt nodig is. Kunnen er een aantal van die werkende kolencentrales uit die nu gewoon blijven produceren terwijl de windstroom naar Engeland gaat.

Additional cross-zonal interconnectivity to solve intra-zonal congestion within Germany will create only extra loop flows at the expense of cross-zonal trade. Will this be in line with the European Electricity Market Design? Better to split up German's unique bidding zone ahead of the completion of the north-south transmission line within Germany (Suedlink).

I think the project was already too far in progress to put on hold due to cbam. Let's see where it goes. Sad to see such an explicit capacity again :(
