In 2011 I participated in the best internship program of my life at UC Berkeley. It was with Ayodele Nzinga and the Lower Bottom Playaz, a theatre group serving West Oakland’s children. The program was for literacy development, but the way we taught literacy was through play. Play was the pillar to the whole program. Everyday we played theatre and created short plays that had a beginning, middle, end and a theme. It was a transformative experience in seeing play in action. It would be a decade later that I would become a father and was going through a breakup during the pandemic. It was a difficult transition for my daughter who was three at the time. And no parent wants to see their kids suffer from pain, and so I made sure to implement several strategies and one of the main strategies was play. Everyday we had together I made sure we had lots of play time and still continue to play to this day and hope to do so for as long as possible. It immensely helped both of us heal and am so greatful for understanding how powerful and essential play is for children, ourselves and our society.

Play is kids' superpower and so valuable for connection. Let's build playful families and communities together.
