As someone who grew up on the Thames, this smart infrastructure project is incredibly exciting! Oxford is taking a major step towards cleaner waterways with the installation of eco-mooring bollards, giving boaters access to electrical power instead of relying on diesel engines and wood burners. This initiative, supported by the Air Quality Grant, not only tackles air pollution but also supports boaters in transitioning to cleaner energy systems. Projects like these show how we can balance sustainable innovation with community needs, and I can’t wait to see the positive impact on the canals and rivers I hold dear. 🌍🚉 The recent SITCE 2024 showcased various technological advancements and integration of transport systems in urban mobility. The innovations presented echo the work we do at Ramboll Smart Mobility in the planning of mobility hubs. These hubs are where technology meets purpose, ensuring our journeys - and the cities they energise - are smarter, cleaner, more efficient and inclusive. Mobility hubs are a key element in the decarbonisation strategy, promoting sustainable travel and aligning with broader goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While cities grapple with the adverse impacts of climate change, local governments, especially in developing nations, need to rethink the paradigm by which urban mobility and urban planning can be guided more cautiously.  A-S-I, introduced in 1994, is a demand-based mobility planning approach that can assist local governments in achieving significant mobility-related GHG emission reductions, reduced energy consumption, reduced congestion, and ultimately, more livable cities. What a brilliant sight at touchdown - the newly installed 6.8 megawatt #solarfarm, made up of 12,000 panels at Birmingham Airport as it commits to an ambitious #netzero target by 2033. Australia needs more than just electric vehicles to tackle transport emissions – new report 🚗⬇️ A study by Monash Uni's Climateworks Centre calls for a multi-pronged approach, warning that relying solely on EVs isn't enough. The key recommendations include: ✅ Boosting public transport, biking & walking ✅ Making freight deliveries more efficient ✅ Reducing unnecessary travel ✅ Using lower-carbon fuels "If we focus just on EVs, we're vulnerable to supply issues and tech challenges," says lead author Lily Rau. The mixed strategy aims to cut emissions in line with the Paris Agreement while improving transport efficiency and convenience. "We need to rethink how we plan & fund transport projects to prioritise emissions cuts," says transport lead Helen Rowe. I have long advocated the enormous opportunity to lower emissions and improve quality of life through the built environment. The data are confirming this, with GHG reductions coming from materials, construction processes, demolition and of course a building’s use, whether it is a home, office, hospital, recreational facility, school or place of worship. To me, this is where climate action lives. We all have a stake and we can all reap benefits (lower costs, better health by reducing toxic exposure, thermal comfort as our climate changes). Time to get serious about a comprehensive approach to decarbonising buildings!

On 28 August 2024, the 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 (𝗦𝗕𝗧𝗶) introduced a new plan to help the buildings sector reduce its carbon emissions and move towards #NetZero goals. Since buildings are responsible for nearly 40% of the world's energy-related #CarbonEmissions, this new plan provides clear, science-backed steps for companies to reduce their impact on the planet. As #ClimateChange continues to be a major challenge, this plan is a critical move to align the buildings sector with global climate targets. 𝗔 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 The new plan offers practical advice for #RealEstateDevelopers, #ConstructionCompanies, and building owners on how to cut down on carbon emissions and adopt more #EcoFriendly practices. **Two thirds of councils not confident of hitting net zero targets....** Two thirds of councils are not confident of achieving their net zero targets within their set timescales, according to new research conducted by the Local Government Association (LGA). Given the severe issues and pressures faced by many councils, the pursuit of Net Zero targets has become more critical than ever.
