  • If you own a small or medium-sized business in Barnet, now is the perfect time to start thinking about ways to improve your waste and resource management with ReLondon’s free online workshop. With new Environment Act 2021 regulations coming into effect at the end of March requiring businesses with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees to separate their waste into three bins: general waste, recycling and food waste; why not get ahead of the curve and learn how you can reduce your business waste and make adapting to these changes a bit easier. In partnership with the Mayor of London, ReLondon is hosting a free online workshop for small to medium-sized businesses to improve their waste and resource management. Whether you run a retail store, café, salon, or service-based business, this is your chance to explore innovative solutions for a sustainable future. Supporting Barnet residents with free home energy advice to take practical action🔋 As part of our efforts to help residents tackle rising energy costs, we’ve partnered with Groundwork London’s Green Doctor service to launch Barnet’s Free Home Energy Fix. 💚 This initiative offers FREE, tailored energy-saving support to the borough’s most vulnerable residents, including: - A free home energy visit - Energy-saving kits like LED bulbs and draught-proofing materials - Personalised energy-saving advice, tips on switching suppliers, and help accessing government grants With the energy price cap rising and households facing increased financial pressure, this service is crucial in helping residents save money, reduce energy consumption, and stay warm this winter. Eligible households include: - Residents aged 60+ - Families with children under 10 - Low-income households (earning under £21,000) - People with long-term health conditions With 40% of the borough’s carbon emissions coming from homes, the campaign helps contribute to our sustainability goals, of becoming a net zero borough by 2042. Thank you to B&M Retail 👏🏼 for sponsoring the campaign with providing 4 x £100 vouchers to spend in their stores, up for grabs to residents that make a referral by 25 February 2025. Watch the campaign video to see how residents like Janet, featured with Green Doctor Afeli, are benefiting from this free service 👉🏼 https://lnkd.in/e6VvdyaK Please spread the message to anyone who could benefit. • This winter we’re spotlighting local businesses working towards becoming greener and supporting Barnet’s net zero journey🌍 Meet Ian from IanDecor: “I got rid of my diesel van through the ULEZ Scrappage Scheme and now solely use an electric cargo bike for my decorating business. I bought the cargo bike back in 2019 and gradually used it more and more. The Scheme was just the nudge I needed and I haven't looked back since.” Is your business making eco-friendly changes? We want to hear from you! 👇 https://lnkd.in/epq77QRe

  • ASB week of action Last week, the Council’s Community Safety team, in partnership with the police, carried out a week-long initiative targeting anti-social behaviour (ASB) as part of our commitment to keeping Barnet safer, which involved joint patrols using our new CCTV van and hosting community safety pop-up hubs. We encouraged residents to report breaches of Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) and Immobilise, a valuable tool for protecting belongings against theft, increasing the likelihood of recovery. Outcomes from the week included: ✅ 175 new cases opened for investigation by the Community Safety Team. ✅ 104 fly-tips reported, investigated, and cleared by our Street Scene Team. ✅ 50 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) issued for ASB, environmental crimes, and PSPO violations. ✅ 6 PSPO breaches referred for prosecution ✅ 172 commercial waste audits completed to ensure businesses are waste management compliant. Cllr Conway, Barnet Council’s lead on community safety, said: “Thanks so much to our dedicated community safety team for their hard work every week in all weathers tackling ASB, including working in partnership with local police. We really welcome the difference our ongoing investment in CCTV is making together with the continued impact of the Public Space Protection Order and the pop-up community safety hubs we put in place”. #BarnetCST #PSPO #ASB

  • Yesterday, along with members of the community, local councillors and the Thameslink station team we celebrated the first anniversary of Brent Cross West – London’s youngest railway station, which opened in Barnet last December. As one of the first rail projects in the UK to be led by a local authority we’ve been incredibly proud to watch the popularity of the station grow with over half a million journeys taken to and from Brent Cross West in the last 12 months, that’s around 2,000 trips being taken every day. Brent Cross West has significantly changed the way local people get around the area and is ready to support future development. It is the gateway to our new and growing net zero neighbourhood Brent Cross Town, which we are developing in partnership with Related Argent. Next year at Brent Cross Town we look forward to welcoming our first residents, opening a new community space alongside new public squares and continuing to progress our first office building - home to Sheffield Hallam University’s future London campus. •  Ending 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 🧡 Today marks the end of the #16Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign. A global issue that affects 1 in 3 women worldwide—from physical abuse to harassment. Over the past two weeks, we’ve worked closely with partners to deliver events focused on women’s safety, support for those experiencing domestic abuse, and educational visits to schools by our MPs and councillors. As part of the ongoing #HearMyVoice partnership with Middlesex University, students showcased their projects addressing everyday misogyny and sexism—also featured on poster sites around Hendon. Internally, our environmental services leadership team held a talk for male staff members encouraging male colleagues to speak up if they witness harmful behaviours that perpetuate gender-based violence. In Barnet, we will continue to challenge inequality as part of our mission to create a safer, more inclusive community for everyone.
