RHO MOTION LIVE: EUROPE | ESS Market: Transforming the EU grid through resiliency “Projections from the EIA about the future electricity generation mix in the US show there is a way to remove the use of coal in the US – we can displace fossil fuel penetration” We had speakers from FREYR Battery, bp and Ingrid Capacity on the European Energy Stationary Storage market hosted by Rho Motion’s Iola Hughes. Highlights from the session include: · Europe is trailing the US and China in terms of grid scale storage, but there are positive signs ahead on legislation and some strength in BTM applications. · Gery Bonduelle with Freyr highlighted the importance of ESS for providing grid resiliency in the Energy Market, Capacity Market and Ancillary Service Market. · Nicklas Bäcker from Ingrid capacity discussed the perspective of a developer in the Nordics, with the key to a sustainable transition being a cost-effective integration of ESS to support low CO2 electricity. · David Ainsworth from bp discussed how BESS is crucial to support a multitude of its focus growth areas, namely EV charging, green hydrogen production and renewables deployment. RHO MOTION LIVE: EUROPE | Battery Recycling Strategies “Based on Ascend Elements’ Hydro-to-Cathode process, there is a potential recovery value of $6,723 based on a 100kWh EV battery pack. RHO MOTION LIVE: EUROPE | Battery Technology Roadmaps: Session 1 “EV battery technology development is focused on increasing energy density. However, price point is also important. LFP and sodium ion battery demand increase for that reason.” In the first of two sessions on Battery Technology Roadmaps, Rho Motion’s Battery Research Analyst, Victoria Hugill spoke with Tomas Svozil of Altris AB and Maxime Ferté from Blue Solutions about Sodium-ion technology and Gen4 solid-state batteries for passenger cars. Here’s a summary of what was discussed: · Demand for sodium-ion battery as the next LFP battery is expected to increase on the back of safety and lower cost benefit. The lithium-ion battery production process can be modified for sodium-ion battery production, offering a ‘drop-in’ solution and lowered CAPEX. Commercialisation of sodium-ion is currently localised in China, mainly led by CATL and the first mass-producer HiNa. · In 2022, Altris started producing its own sodium-ion cathode materials. Altris is a leading developer of sodium ion technology in Europe with plans to build a 2k tonne-capacity by 2026. · Blue Solutions is currently in the process of developing GEN4 solid state batteries, and test results have been positive for implementation in passenger vehicles. RHO MOTION LIVE: EUROPE | European EV Market: The road to zero emissions    This morning, Honda’s Deputy General Manager Michael Fischer joined Rho Motion’s Managing Director, Adam Panayi and Automotive Research Lead, William Roberts to discuss smart charging of electric vehicles and the challenges faced by OEMs in pursuit of 2035 targets. Here is an overview of some of the key discussion points: · EV pricing disparity remains, and will be crucial to, 100% adoption. The largest gap is present in the smallest vehicle segments, where price point is most critical · LFP market share is increasing globally, with the US seeing the greatest jump this year to 15%, compared to 6% in 2022. This is less true in the EU where LFP share sits closer to 5%. We anticipate this trend to continue, in part due to the long lead times from legacy OEMs in the region. · Simultaneous ramp up of renewable energy and EVs creates significant stress on the grid · Honda R & D has established a test bed for energy management to test and validate smart charging opportunities   The full article will be available on our Membership shortly. Here’s an overview of what they discussed: · The direction of the legislation will be taken by the new Parliament and the new Commission – we don’t yet know how that will look. One thing is clear, the European elections next year matter, certainly from a batteries perspective. · The IRA was a massive wake-up call for Europe and has reshaped the battery ecosystem. · The IRA brought down the battery pack cost 25-30% in the US and it is in price parity with China. The long-term effect of other subsidies will improve the levelized cost of electricity and provide an even bigger benefit to the US - perhaps leaving Europe behind.
