So what did we get up to at our final After Hours event before the summer break? 👇 This time, the Valley explored innovations in primary food production as we were welcomed by our co-hosts, Valley partners Agroscope and the Etat de Fribourg - Staat Freiburg, at Grangeneuve, Fribourg's inspiring agricultural centre of excellence. 🔍 In the distance, we could see the construction site that will become Agroscope's new research campus in 2026. Fabian Wahl gave us a sneak peek of what's in store and shared their plans for a living lab canteen focused on behavioural science. 💡 Pascal Toffel took us on a fascinating journey through the food pyramid 🏛 Jerry Krattiger presented the Canton's key initiatives and focus on FoodTech and explained the interplay with federal, cantonal and municipal policies. Half of the group then took a tour of the centre's high tech experimental milking cow farm, while other colleagues took a deep dive into the technology on site. The event drew to a close with some networking over a delicious Fourchette Verte and Terroir Fribourg apero 😋 Thanks to Fabian Wahl, Jerry Krattiger, Pascal Toffel and Thomas Rime for giving us a taster of your world and to all the ecosystem players who joined us! 🙏 #Switzerland #Fribourg #Research #PublicPolicy #Innovation Eliana Zamprogna Marie-France Tschudin Christoph Hartmann Natacha Nagornova Katarzyna Winek, MBA Marie-France Watson, CED, DES Maëlle Bydlon

Isn't it great when a meeting leaves you feeling inspired! Yesterday, the #LifeHubMonheim team (myself, Nisha M. & Juergen Benting from Bayer Crop Science | Innovation Ecosystem had a great exchange with Isabelle Schiffer, Ph.D, Dr. Marita Mehlstäubl and Marc Kley from Gateway Excellence Start-up Center University of Cologne . We really enjoyed being hosted at their inspiring new home at the InnoDom Cologne. THANK YOU! We talked about: 🌾 Why innovation in agriculture is so important 🌾 🌍 How innovation ecosystems can transform to create more impact 🌍 🎓 How valuable academic research is as the foundation of applied innovation 🎓 My takeaways: 🌾The mix of academic excellence, a fantastic start-up ecosystem and key industry partners #TeamBayer 😉 makes NRW an ideal place to establish a lighthouse program for breakthrough innovation in agriculture🌾 🌍 Innovation ecosystems naturally evolve, with key players learning from each other and growing together. In my opinion, diversity is critical to innovation, but an overly fragmented landscape has it's own challenges; increasing impact will come by bringing key players closer together 🌍 🎓 In Germany, we need to better incentivise the translation of academic research into practical applications. Independent fundamental research is critical, though, translating that discovery into an impact on peoples lives when the opportunity arises, is essential 🎓 👇👇Feel free to share your thoughts on these three points below 👇👇 Thanks also to the start-up The Oater for showing us the great progress they have made in making #oatmilk more sustainable. Raphael Dumain Axel Trautwein Dr. Rolf Christian Becker Jessica Christiansen Dr. Claudia Letmathe @Heiko Rieck

Securing food systems via multilevel cooperation: New European Forum Alpbach Blogpost with #10x100 Lab Documentation Modern food systems are both contributors to and victims of the polycrises. Relations between food and water, soil, biodiversity and animal well being, value chains and retail prices are deeply interconnected and much more vulnerable than ever before. The unique chance to shift from depleting to regenerating biosystems is not just a choice but a duty. At the same time, the Europe-wide farmers' protests show how important it is to recognise daily realities and co-create viable paths to transform critical infrastructures and public systems. During #EFA23 the 10x100 Cities Lab - hosted by Politics for Tomorrow, Dark Matter Labs and the Global Parliament of Mayors in collaboration with Stadt Mannheim & Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar - focused on core questions of transforming our food systems as a security imperative. Central insights are: ➡️ The transformation of modern food systems is a complex security issue, crucial to any societal development and of political importance. ➡️ Capable systems can only be established if conditional pathways within planetary boundaries are considered and supported by transformative capital stacks. ➡️ Multilevel bioregions, defined by natural ecological boundaries, offer a framework for shifts across different governance levels addressing a planetary scale. ➡️ Local communities and cities, as hubs of innovation, can apply democratising approaches to production, distribution and consumption schemes with regional implications. ➡️ Transformation alliances can build the proposed capacities through connected action learning, regulatory living labs and communal bottom-up support. The attached framework, developed by over 40 practitioners across various fields, aims to stimulate discussions on creating conditions for unleashing cross-sectoral potential. Futures Researcher and Strategic Foresight Consultant at 4CF The Futures Literacy Company | Founder at the Biennale Warszawa Foundation | Art & Tech & Society Curator | Trainer | Gallup Certified Strengths Coach
I had the honor and pleasure of moderating a #foresight workshop on future(s) scenarios of the food system transition by 2040 - on behalf of 4CF The Futures Literacy Company - for the partners of the Geek4Food consortium. Thank you PAOLA PITTIA and Mario Roccaro for sparking the idea of this workshop. We developed scenarios from clusters of projections (based on uncertainties about the future), embedding personas in the imagined futures worlds (creating their empathy maps), asking what opportunities and risks are related to them, what recommendations could be important, and what new green and digital skills could be key in each snapshot of the future. Participants created 4 alternative future(s) scenarios: (1) Dichotomy of food security, (2) Healthy people, (3) Feeding AI-Natives, (4) Collapse of food systems. Each described a different future in the context of food security & safety, sustainable food systems, food waste, (bio)technology and other important themes related to the transformation of the planetary food system. Some insights from the workshop: 👉 Protect critical and creative skills in education, 👉 Humans should always be in the loop, 👉 Ethical and value-based thinking will be crucial, 👉 The importance of a free will and human choice (not algorithmically-biased behavioural conditioning), 👉 Food is also about having fun and relationships, 👉 Critical skills identified by participants: 🍀 Digital / #AILiteracy (combined with ethical thinking about technology) 🍀 #Bioprinting 🍀 #Foodtech skills associated with diversity and variety of food products 🍀 #Ethics and #AI data skills 🍀 Human AI Supervision 🍀 Systems thinking 🍀 Ethics related to food 🍀 Ethical Food System Developer 🍀 Food supply chain management 🍀 Multi-sectoral collaborative skills Here I would like to thank all the brilliant participants who, through their commitment and dedication, brought a wealth of valuable insights, ideas, competence, imagination, humour, passion and creativity to our work. It was time well spent in which we had a lot of fun with creative collaboration.
